Dad's PB Swan river prawn 108g

A couple of weeks ago dad caught his personel best prawn in about 5m of water whilst night diving. The prawn weighed 108g. both of us have dived the swan for years and have never come across one this big, underwater it must have looked like a cray :p

Not that odd around Perth

Fri, 2009-06-05 08:02

We used to regularly get prawns that size night diving in, of all places, Cockburn Sound and yes they were indeed the size of small crays - would get them often by seeing their eyes poking above the sand (buried) and even at night you could make out the distinct imprint of the prawn beneath the sand and simply grab ém by hand.  Six or seven in a dive was not unusual.   Used to also get a great feed of scollops before the allegedly minor fertiliser plant cyanide spill turned some of the bottom into a desert.

That is a stonker prawn for the river. Outdoes my PB for sure. I haven't seen that one that size in the river; although there are stories being told by the old and injured divers amongst us. Great pic.

Joes Fish shop in mandurah

If you are lucky enough to get on Joes Xmas prawn list and ask for Jumbos you get them this size and bigger. One year I got a Kg of jumbos and 1 kg large. There was 11 prawns in the jumbo kilo and some of them where "cray" size.

Made for a very difficult Prawn cocktail.

Have noticed that the prawns

Fri, 2009-06-05 13:57

Have noticed that the prawns have been massive this year. Caught one last week that went 27cm. Biggest i have seen. Not uncommon at over 20 cm this year.

Any one got any theories?

Tasty!

Yeah that's a big prawn alright. There are 'leader' prawns that I have bought before that are a meal each prawn. Not as sweet as the little ones though. Must say I agree that the prawns in the river this year did seem pretty big.

cheers guys for all the positive feedback. At this particular spot we seem to get them bigger then the usual blackwell reach, mids, and point walter, however not as many per dive.  the wiered thing is most of the big ones my dad and i have come across where in 3 to 5m of water and very close into the river bank.
