Dampier Triple tail
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2012-08-09 16:16
Just another challenge. Want to try and catch one of these sportsfish. Know they hang around the cyclone moorings. But has anyone got any better tips than blind casting a lure to them.
Are there certain moorings, or even the old barges that sit there for ages that would be a better option to try.
Was going to use some R2S Triho's which I have and have been told is the go. Any other lures etc worth a go.

Pound for pound
While you are at it drop a bait or lure in front of a batfish, they are on a par with the tripltail as far a grunt goes, though only every caught a small tripletail

Little bit early for them
Little bit early for them still. Wait till it warms up a bit more.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Ive found you need to be
Ive found you need to be accurate on your first cast, if you fluff it they often get shy. They also often move quite slowly and sort of half heartedly engulf the lure at times so resist the urge to set the hook to qikly. They love flies and will take most lures, bibbed monnows etc ideal. One qik accurate cast and you should be on, dont cast behind the fish, that can spook them also. They arent used to things coming charging up from behind.

Caught a couple whilst in
Caught a couple whilst in Broome a few years back. Used to use the nils master spearheads in the blue/white colour. Never really targeted them as such, but if there was ever any floating debris (mangrove branches etc) we used to cast at them and often there would be a triple tail or two hanging off it. Pretty rare capture though.

Great fish to target!
Haven't fished for them in Dampier but have caught my fair share in Broome over the years!!i have also had luck with spearheads, also give soft plastics a crack! Don't know if you can still get them but juro's bullheads in a clear glitter was regularly smashed!for bait fishing drift past on an outgoing tide and get your bait down s few meters on the drift past!.after one fish go to next mooring and rotate through each mooring! Very easily spooked! Great fish to catch and sensational on the chew!!hope this helps!!

Moorings
I have caught a couple years ago around the bigger moorings, had to flick the bait very close to the mooring, they do seem to stay close to the mooring and don't venture very far away from it.
As pilbara brad said you need the stealth approach as they are spooked easy.
If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough
