Ah i remember my Old man and Grandad taking me fishing for Carp.  Me grandad used to soak them in Lemon and garlic in his bath tub, for about 4-5 hrs filleted of course then after that salt them and cook em up.  If i remember they actually tasted alright i was quite young at the time.  My dad on the other hand used to hang em up on a tree and take potshots at it with his ol faithful rifle.  Bloody nucience but good ol fun if nothing else was being caught.

theses fish can only survive in well oxygenated and clean river situations to which they contribute by eating scum and filth in the water if you take a look outside australia and see what they have done for a very poluted Euope you may rethink youn narrow mindedness

INVASIVE PEST

Wed, 2012-07-25 20:20

Noxious means posionous, Carp are a very invasive fish they out breed our native species, they damage river banks with their feeding method, when there's a vast increase in competion for food native species suffer. I have not heard of any positive effect they have had on the European waters systems. To say I'm (we) are narrow minded is to be uninformed. Have a look at a story done on land line ABC for the research and control measures which are being tested world wide and you may reconsider how economicaly damaging this introducted pest is. Only business making money out of carp is the bloke turning them into fertilizer, These are the fish removed from Aussie waterways because they don't belong.

Courtesy of Wikipedia: Yeah carp are great things beachkid, FFS.

Common carp have been introduced, sometimes illegally, to most continents and some 59 countries. Due to their fecundity and their feeding habit of grubbing through bottom sediments for food, they are notorious for altering their environments. In feeding, they may destroy, uproot, disturb and eat submerged vegetation, causing serious damage to native duck, such as canvasbacks, and fish populations.[20] Similar to the grass carp, the vegetation they consume is not completely digested, and rots after excretion, raising the nutritional level of the water and causing exsessive algae growth. They destroy nests of other fish and eat their eggs, reducing their numbers significantly.

Efforts to eradicate a small colony from Tasmania's Lake Crescent without using chemicals have been successful, but the long-term, expensive and intensive undertaking is an example of both the possibility and difficulty of safely removing the species once it is established.[21] One proposal, regarded as environmentally questionable, is to control common carp by deliberate exposing them to carp-specific Koi herpes virus with its high mortality rate. In Utah Lake, the common carp's population is expected to be reduced by 75% by using nets to catch millions of them and either give them to people who will eat them or processing them into fertilizer. This, in turn, will give the native June sucker a chance to recover its declining population. Another method is by trapping them in tributaries they use to spawn with seine nets and exposing them to rotenone. This method has shown to reduce their impact within 24 hours and greatly increase the native vegetation and desirable fish species. This also leaves the baby carp easily preyed upon by native fish.

In Australia, enormous anecdotal and mounting scientific evidence indicates introduced carp are the cause of permanent turbidity and loss of submergent vegetation in the Murray-Darling river system, with severe consequences for river ecosystems, water quality and native fish species.[22] In Victoria, Australia, common carp has been declared as noxious fish species, the quantity a fisher can take is unlimited.[23] In South Australia, it is an offence for this species to be released back to the wild.[24] An Australian company converts common carp into plant fertilizer.[25]

Common carp were brought to the United States in 1831.[26] In the late 19th century, they were distributed widely throughout the country by the government as a food-fish, but they are no longer prized as a food-fish. As in Australia, their introduction has been shown to have negative environmental consequences,[27] and they are usually considered to be invasive species. Millions of dollars are spent annually by natural resource agencies to control common carp populations in the United States.[22]

Common carp are believed to have been introduced into the Canadian province of British Columbia from Washington. They were first noted in the Okanagan Valley in 1912, as was their rapid growth in population. Carp are currently distributed in the lower Columbia (Arrow Lakes), lower Kootenay, Kettle (Christina Lake), and throughout the Okanagan system.[28]

They are the most distributed fish in the world, I may be wrong but I've read/heard that their eggs can stick to the legs of water fowl and that is another way they are appearing in land locked water ways.

Check the facts out first, once you have them you can then make an informed opinion. As for the Darling Basin there is a bit more happening over there than you elude at. I would like to see the Federal government continue the grants given to our scientist for the work they have started. There is a good possibility that one of these studies will help with the control/eradication of cane toads.

So let me get this right.

Your saying a feral species of fish that destroys natural aquatic environments and by extension the natural organisms that originally resided there, and has done so worldwide, is actually in fact good for these environments.

What's your opinion on redfin perch, rabbits, cats and foxes in Australia beachkid?

Thu, 2012-07-26 06:07

Wipe your chin beachkid, your dribbling brown stuff. Basically what your saying is every scientist in the country has it wrong & that you know better.........

I don't think so.

All the animals your talking about are introduced, by your logic we should just keep introducing new animals to keep the last thing we introduced under control until we finally have an apex predator that kills the bloody lot. What's your plan to control the foxes, a bloody tiger? What are you going to do to control the apex predator that kills everything else? The cane toad was a real success at controling the Cane Beetle wasn't it? 25yrs ago I could walk out my back door, throw a line in the Murray & have a better than average chance of cathcing a cod or yellowbelly. Now if you go fish the same places you'd be lucky to see a cod a month. You'll have no problems catching carp though, you can catch a pile of carp 3 ft high in just a few hours.

FACT: Carp have all but wiped out the native species in the murray-darling system by severely damaging the environment, severely depleting available food supplies & by direct predation on the young of native species.

FACT: You have absolutely no idea what your talking about but your impression of a pelican is very good.

Sorry people, barely coherant rant over.

SCOTT, I can't put a picture of the holder up because I can't remember my photobucket account details. I'll show you what I mean next time we go fishin.

Second that. Carpfishing is huuge in belgium - holland - france - germany - ... Big bucks involved. It's sort of the only sportfish we have. Mind you, they do grow up to 30kgs+ in the larger canals and lakes.

I was a keen carper for 6-7 years. Now that I've experienced pelagic fishing in australia, I'm afraid I'll never be able to settle for carp again..

It's unfortunate, I have to go overseas to choose a bride, and since I have no friends to care for them in my absence, I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a nice place for me to release my aquariums of pet cane toads.  They don't like it when I play my Barry Manilow records too loud so I was thinking of somewhere tranquil and unspoilt.  Your help is appreciated.

Don't know if there is still any left in there but the lake down the hill from the old Picton church in Bunbury used to be full of the buggers maybe we could give Beachkid a rod and bucket of worns and set him loose on them.

He would make a good pal of the one ages back who reckoned he would fish in 30knot winds from his dinghy and then took photo of other pics and posted them up only to be found out by his reflection back off the screen.

They both need a carp introduced to them head first up the wrong end.

Serioulsy though, were fun to catch, they did go hard on 4lb line. All of them caught on corn kernles straight out of the can.
