A mate of mine was up there not long ago and said they couldn't get away from the pinkies. And kept getting sharked whenever they fished the west side of the island
The fellas land based on the inside were slaying the baldies. Up to 10 a day. I went out with anthony vaughn one arvo and found the shallows on the inside holding great fish. Macks, black & pink snapper, rankins ects.
Was up there last month fished out of turtle bay mainly down west side and north of DHI for 4 days. Bagged out all species except for pinkies with good catches rankins to 10kg and reds to 8kg and red throat to 4kg in 60-80m west side. Plenty of baldies, trout, spanglies in shallow on west side. Mackerel and tuna around in close to light house. Sharks were worst in shallow reef country 20-30m deep north between DHI to Dampier Reef. Bait killed jigs and plastics but the rankins and passionfruit cod in shallow water loved the Macarthys chartruese/pearl paddletail.
Was up there a few weeks ago. Plenty of rankin, baldies and some reds in the 50-70's. Cant go wrong in the bay for pinkies - just fish up to the high tides.
Pelagics were a bit slow but we got some good YFT and a few spaniards. Hooked a sail but dropped it
Sharks were the worst weve had, especially out from south passage and up around turtle bay. Had a double hook up of XL wahoo sharked boatside :(. We ended up turning to the spearing so we could talk them out of eating fish and got some good macks up to 31kg's that way...
