Dhuies on livebait

Morning all
Just wondering if anyone has made the effort to use livies for dhuies. On a charter last year the operator had a tank of yakkas/scalies/yellowtail. They were mainly used as dead baits but some got sent over with a 6/0 through the nose and seemed to get a good hit rate.
You dont here much about using livies but thought I might give it a go. What are your thoughts.

Yeah Whitey in Jurien often gathers livies for the baitos to fish for dhuies, seem to work well from what I've seen. Can't beat live!

Yep, thats who I was speaking of in the OP.
Seeing as Whitey is only one step down from God (sorry Whitey, 2nd to God is not that bad) I guess I will give it a go.

Hadnt thought of that. Normally strip them up as fillet bait.

Western King Wrasse
Without question the most deadly bait on big dhuies I have ever used - before the changes in bag limits were introduced I caught three on the same bait - the first on the livey, landed that fish and retreived the now dead and partly crushed wrasse, dropped it back down whilst bleeding the first fish only to have it taken the moment it got to the bottom, another good fight and the much worse for wear bait again retrieved and dropped again whilst bleeding and icing the first two only to hook up again ........I returned the third fish by the way but it went at least 8 kilos - whenever I catch a western king I lick my lips, big ones get filleted for strip bait, small ones dropped back live ...........Magic !

Definetely wrasse or live sand whiting, i was brought up live baiting for Dhuies. We used to go out with some red meat to catch sandies and wrasse and then fish for dhu's. Mainly fishing shallow water, trick is to give the fish plenty of line. A good indicator a dhu has been playing with the bait is scales have come off behind the gill line (normally indicates a dhu) if top of the body has been bitten means squid or cuttlie.
Only thing is you don't get as much bycatch ie blackarse and snapper, although some days you will get them on livies as well.

I usually lightly hook through the back with a 6/0 circle
As some times of the year cuttlies become an absolute pain though ( and I have never caught a single fish on fresh cuttlie despite trying often indeed on a boat with three people aboard have often remained totally biteless whilst they hammer the fish ?????????)
Oh yes and totally agree with butterflied fresh herring as well - have tried immediately icing and vac packing western kings for later trips and had NO success on the frozen product - go figure ??

Live Sand whiting the best I have used.....if you can keep em alive.

We always used a running sinker to a swivel and then about 1m of mono to single hook for the live bait.

My first sized Dhu was landed on the same rig as Nauti Buoy, with a live sand whiting.
I always have this style of rig out while drifting. Usualy with a Wrasse fillet or a whole Sandie and try to work it deep. It keeps out of the way while bottom bouncing and tends to catch the fish of the day.
My Nephew caught this nice Tuna on the ( floater rig ) with a whole Sand Whiting, between the FFB and Garden Island. Very nice first Tuna ,..

I've started using a running
I've started using a running sinker clip on my lighter gear. if i ran one on the heavier gear what type of sinker? I have only ever used snapper sinkers for bottom stuff but talking to grantartic on the weekend makes me think i should be using teardrops / bombs. what size /type of hook do you use?

Drift Baits
I usualy drift bait with fillets , whole fish or squid and live baits.
Check this thread out , http://fishwrecked.com/forum/whats-drift-baiting . The guys give great detail about this style of fishing .
Some times i put a small wrasse straight on my patternoster rig. Just lip hook it with a large circle hook and send it down.
I prefer the teardrop sinkers mainly because the have a swivell and this helps with line twist. ( plus i make my own ) Some guy's dont like them because the swivell can break if you get snaged. I actualy like that, it saves loseing the whole rig .

live bait keeping
I've had no luck trying to keep small sand whiting alive from the trip from ffb to the 100m line !!! Is it just me or do others have the same problem, Ive tried aireators and water changes with no luck, only thing havent tried is the deck wash hose in the bucket full time ...

you have to use whiting
caught in water less than 2/3 m deep other wise the whiting die straight away the ones you get in 20m behind GI are good for dead baits only , if your leaving from point peron stop at the first channel markers after the coat hanger and pickup some from around there its only a couple of meters deep i have found these ones stay alive
