The Dinghy is up and Running

I thought it was time to finally put up the additions my bother (Ollie) and I made to the old dinghy we bought mid last year. The hull is a 12ft Clark cutter, structurally it was sound with no leaks and it felt much more sturdy than most modern tinnies however cosmetically it wasn’t in the best shape. We basically bought it for our trip to exmouth last year, we used the engine off our tender which while it was only a 5hp it was still fast enough to troll. The boat lasted the trip and we decided to keep it, however not in its current state. Before Exmouth we added all the fishing accessories including rod holders ect.it was then when we arrived home the major work began, we started stripping the paint, which proved to be the hardest and most time consuming part of the addition. Here are a few before pics.

We used paint stripper as well as a high pressure hose, however this still left behind crappy old paint, it then took me two days straight to sand back the paint and to reveal the original aluminum.

Photobucket We then decided on a painting method and decided to uses a two pack two part polyurethane gloss finish which was by no means the cheapest or the easiest but it came out with great results and It just makes the effort that much more rewarding. To make the floors we decided to use 10mm thick outdoor ply and use ribs for support and then coat in glass, we thought doing this would be the lightest and the most cost effective method. We then wrapped the boards with carpet.

Once the paint and floorboards were complete we proceded to fit all electronics and extras. We then decided to fork out and buy a new engine and after ringing around bought a new 15hp mariner which has been great since we bought it. Here are a few pics once it was finished

so hopfully we have given any of you who are looking at or in the process of pimping out a dinghy a little insight into the effort and the reward at the end.

absolutely amazing work

Mon, 2010-02-22 15:30

absolutely amazing work guys. and a really good write-up too.

I'm actually thinking of finding myself a tinny too as my 14ft old f/glass dinghy is way too heavy for my 9.8 tohatsu.

what kind of speeds/how far out are you able to get with the 15hp? and also how was it with the 5hp? And also how's the tinny for room when fishing? 2max or 3 or 4max?

cheers

Mon, 2010-02-22 15:41

Experience wise I’ve just finished school and about to start engineering at uni and my brother is currently in year 11 so not much experience but we picked it up along the way. I wouldn’t mind ending up as a naval architect so I guess this is the starting step. speed wise the five got her to around 8kn and the 15 gets her to over 20kn with two people, fishing wise it stars getting a little crowded with three so I’d say two is perfect. The furtherest I’ve taken it so far was last thurs when i went to the 30m mark behind straggies, which didn’t seem far off rotto. I think that’s about the limit without and epirb.

first the prime which was just applied with a brush then the two under coats and the top gloss finish was applied with rollers. A very long process when you can only paint half the boat at a time and the paint takes half the day to dry.

Mon, 2010-02-22 16:51

The Dinghy looks great, really good job.  It is a great sense of satisfaction to complete a refurb/rebuild on a boat, and the best part is knowing that structurally the craft is sound and everything is new or refitted.  Congrats she looks awesomeSmile

How many tins of paint stripper did it take to get the old paint off?  I am thinking of repainting my old Quinnie and was wondering how to strip the old paint efficiently.

What a great inspiration to get out on the water without smashing the budget. You and your brother got stuck into the project and saw it through to the end, the transformation is a real credit to you both. How sweet it is to pull a few fish and enjoy a pretty sharp looking tinny.

Thu, 2010-03-11 23:37

the glue used was just liquid nails, how ever we also used s/s screws which does much more than any glue. To cut holes is easy all you have to do is have a starting hole which can be cut using a drill and large bit. If you need any more info just pm
