Discarded Plastics

A shot of a shark that has swam into an un cut plastic strap from a carton/box.Once the shark swims into the circle of the strap there is no way it can swim backward to get it off resulting i it gradually digging into its flesh and in time killing it.The meat on it was just like jelly inside a shark skin bag.Having seen literally thousands of sharks and fish over the years it was definitely in the worst condition of any of them.

Please bring your rubbish especially plastics home with you and most of all cut the straps on any cartons you open whether on a boat or anywhere it may get into the river/ocean environment.

not good to see that sort of thing even on a shark. we are always pulling bits of rubbish out of the water and one thing i hate seeing is those balloons that get set free on occasions as they end up comming back to earth and quite often in the water and ends up getting eaten by something , end result is death

Like a bait box? Was the strap still there? Was it a blue one?

Been a while since I caught it and have forgotten what colour the band was.Not that it would have made much difference as I have seen all colours of bait carton strapping.

I'm always amazed and disgusted at the crap people leave in the water. Last trip I got 50m of weedy cray line and the one before it a floating crab net. Both retrieved and binned.

if you ask me - and discarded rubbish on land has an impact too. I was driving from Broome to Karratha about 5 years ago and wandering down the middle of the highway was a small skink with it's head jammed in an empty beer can - probably chasing moisture. Managed to catch it and get it off - how many others get caught the same way? - and the little bugger nipped me as well.

Lol It probably bit you because it had a hangover Ian

I agree though. It is disgusting the rubbish you see tossed in the water and on land. Some of the crap that gets left behind on the Perth groynes is a disgrace.

Their is no excuse to not bring your waste(rubbish) back in. The ones that let all the waste go in the water are not real FISHERMAN.

Beach or rock

Fri, 2009-07-24 14:22

When I go beach or rock fishing I usually end up with more than I bought with me to cart home. The amount of mulie packet, shopping bags with leftover bait in them just about puts you off fishing for good.

There is a small boat ramp up here at Dwyer's leap, have found a different time that some lazy prick has dumped goat skins, offal and hocks plus on many more time where its been fish frames and skins. They are too tired or busy to take them to the dump which is approx the same distance from town. They probably think of them as burley to attract crab and fish in while it has the opposite effect due to the rotting nature of it.

There--got it off my chest.

yep, shocking. What's worse is the state of ANY metro beach @ the HWM after these big blows. Plastic, rubber, foam, floats and lines all array of ^&%# littering the HWM. Take a bag (non-plastic :-) and pick some up folks, a small way to make a difference...

Fri, 2009-07-24 17:52

Used to see this a lot many years ago.when crayfishing as a young fella, all boxs of bait had straps on them, which in most cases were cut but some would get missed and end up around the sharks heads not a nice way to die, back in them days all the boats threw all there boxs and plastic over the side as no bins were at the marinas ,when you look back it was disgusting ,but that was how it was done.not to sure where the bands would be coming from now ,as a the boxes are stapled or taped .anyways not good to throw any rubbish over as most ramps have bins for the fishermen. We were down Two Rocks one night crabing and some guys were fishing having a few beers .i went up the shop to come back and find the wife going of her tits at them .They finished fishing and threw there emptys and plastic and all there rubbish stright in the marina .A bin was 15m away.Beleive me they coped both barrels .lisa stuck it to them being asian probably didn't understand a word she was saying ,

A good reason...

Fri, 2009-07-24 18:36

...to bring in a shore-based fishing licence, which apparently they're not doing. Anyone who coughs up the coin for a licence will do it because they are a fisherman/woman first, will appreciate the detrimental effect on the environment, and won't leave their rubbish behind.
