Do you know what a dive flag looks like?

I would hope everyone here knows what a dive flag looks like.

Was diving along the back of garden island yesterday morning and couldn't believe the amount of boats that wanted to come close. No good reason, plenty of ocean but chose to come steaming past.

If this one was any closer he would of ran over my anchor line. Any further away and he would of ran over my divers that surfaced 1 minute later.

No reason to fly by that close to an anchored vessel. Particularly near divers.

Divers just popped up 1 min later.

Clearly flying

 no thats not correct,
Im not being picky but if you are going to quote the rules then it should be quoted correctly.

If you have a proper reason to go into the 50 meters, such as craypots or the flag is in a navigable channel etc you can, but of course there is a danger and liability on all involved.

QUOTE from DOT

All boats must keep at least 50 metres clear of boats, buoys or areas showing diving signals.

Where this is not possible, the approaching vessel should:

  • Proceed at the slowest speed at which the vessel can be safely navigated.
  • Maintain a proper lookout for persons in the water.
  •
  •

I cherry picked the relevent part of the guidelines for the skipper mate as his divers were more than 50m from the boat

Taking a punt but I reckon Skipper Dodgy knows the regs .. moral of the story is don’t go within cooee of a boat with a dive flag up when there’s no need .

The divers may well have been borderline but that’s irrelevant when the offending boat is well inside 50m .

Rottnest is worse

Because if you own a big cruiser you dont have to obey any rules!! Just a matter of time before there is a fatality! There will always be the idiot factor or that moment of inattention.People just seem to want to speed if conditions allow. If you hear a boat dont surface unless it is underneath your boat. Be safe.

They were about 50m away. Distance is hard to judge from a pic.

Does look that way hezzy

Mon, 2016-03-14 22:12

I have seen divers out of the 50mtr meter arc (well thats my guess) but I see the flag and stay well away, like 100mtrs! I give them the desrved space cause I can understand how easliy you could swim out of the 50mtr arc. I don't dive and i am guessing they don't take a surveyors wheel down with them. But as said the passing boat does look too close regardless of a flag. But this sh1t happens everyday out there. And why..... Ignorance? I'm better than you ? Doesn't even know what a dive flag is? Who knows.  I just stay my distance and i hope no-one gets hurt.

Dive flag

Mon, 2016-03-14 22:26

Attracts people. Doesn't stop people. Even when snorkelling in s/ bay doesn't stop windsurfers or kites  missing you by 1 meter ( doing 20 to 30 knots). Doesn't stop fisheries from boarding you while someone on deco line also. Hard one feel your pain. Trust me happens all the time. One day on hookah dive flag on boat plus one on splitter ( 2 divers)2 lines with another dive flag. Mate got dragged upwards 100 miles an hour . Boat hit line on top??? Can't stop it. 80 percent good . Others have no idea...

Not many do Randall, the amount of F$&%sticks I've had run over my lures while trolling is ridiculous, both in the river and up north where the ocean is endless. Not hard to see when someone has rods out trolling.

Here is my version of the same.

Yes a small boat, with a small outboard, but arguably within 15m of the boat with divers in the water.

Reasonable speed

Tue, 2016-03-15 10:13

That boat is clearly not travelling AT reasonable speed, ie hasn't reduced it safely. And distance judging - that angle is already on a different one from a picture if he was next to the boat. The distance is well in truly below 50m when he would have been adjacent to the boat. And whether the divers surface more than 50m away is irrelevant because the boat in question passed the boat with the flag within 50m and NOT at a save speed.
Looking at the landmarks the divers surface where the boat was. Not sure but the wake remnant can be seen closer to shore. That would shit me when I dived in the past.

I must say that i see no reason why that 50 m limit shouldnt be increased to 250 m at least, and increase the distance for the divers to 100 m.  50 m is a ridiculously small amount considering the open expanses of ocean we all enjoy.  In reality it probably reflects more of what is the norm anyway, and also puts a 150 m buffer between the divers and other boats (that are aboding by the rules at least).

I did a double. Early on I did off pt peron. Pretty silty on top but prob 6-7m vis on the bottom.

Garden was heaps worse. Prob 3m vis and lots more surge as you mentioned. Was good to be back in the water after 3 weeks in the desert though.
