Douglascraft

Good evening guys.

Have a mate who is looking at purchasing a larger fibreglass boat over hear in SA for use in our gulfs. In his search he has come across an 18ftr called a Douglascraft. We've never heard of them over here, but a google search suggest they are still built over your side of the country.

As a result i was wondering if there is anyone in these pages that can shed some light on them. Build quality, stability, ride etc etc. This one is gonna be hard to sea trial as the motor is blown and requires a complete rebuild or replace, which for the price of the hull is of little concern. At a glance the hull & trailer look to be in good condition, but again its a relative unknown quantity here in SA and your experiences / knowledge of the hull is appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

I can tell you this much I have owned one  and found it to be a good sea boat and the had a good name over here. If I was looking for a similar boat I'd give it some serious consideration.

Thanks for the advice guys

Brooker, you say you've owned one. Can I ask why you dont have it anymore? Up/downgrade?

Any ideas on hull weight and glass thickness?

Appreciate your input guys as I've spotted another one over here with a near new 150 mec 2 banger.

Any advice on my suspicions that they resemble an early model reef runner?

Good question, was a while ago, think I had to down size.  But I don't recall anything nasty about it.  Similar to a reef runner but smaller buy quite a bit.

The ones I looked at when

The ones I looked at when buying were not very beamy, and a friend had one bury its nose in a wave and get washed through but he didn't have power trim so probably caused by lack of correct trim and/or too much speed.

That was on a sea trial.
