Hi guys,
Does anyone have or used downriggers in perth?
Are they worth the money and do they work as I am thinking of buying one and what makes/mod are good?

I have used them
but not in perth. The cannon sport troller is worth a look as is penn fathom master. Depending on what depth as to weight bomb?? R u thinking of trolling or hanging big baits off it. They are great for slow trolling livies. Get 1 with a counter its heaps easier to see what depth you are working. and change the stainless wire to heavy heavy braid as it wont sing in the water like wire. you can also tune your sounder in to pick up the bomb.

yeah i have just fitted the canon one to my boat ready for exmouth, will be doing a bit of trolling with it, but mainly going to be using it for the broadies as well, still undecided on bomb weight though, the way i see it, is thats it opens up alot more options!!!

10 to 12 lb bombs are the norm
then it comes to release clips. Those aftco roller trollers are the go for heavy stuff. I was using a modified pin style. It was a scotty from memory. Was the goods for braid up to 30lb. The fish would get hooked from the tension of the clip, break away and fight the fish off the rod and reel like normal. If you can afford it the electric ones are the ducks guts. Hit the button and up it comes or down it goes..

Have you decided on a shape??
I was using a standard round ball, but there is a bomb with it looks like a bib and a tail fin which is meant to be the pick. They track straight with less water resistance. You can even tune them so when you are using 2 down riggers they track away from each other.. pretty tricky aye. you loose a bit of depth but gain in width of spread if you get my drift

dragged skirts off exxie with sails and marlin caught .tryied the balls that look a bit like a fish and had nothing but dramas with it ,didnt track well at all .where as the ball is just that a big heavey weight theaty seammed to dragg good and straigh.. imo .and yes i think the ones you tune would be pretty tricky .....to get to track right imo

I did have a cannon
for trolling in harvey for trout when it was hot to get the lure right down when they were retreating to the deeper, cooler water. That was until someone decided that they needed it more than I did.
If you have the money I'd go electric rather than manual. And while I used the attached rod holder, if I was chasing broadbills I would use a better rod holder.
