Drag washers
Submitted by Jason P on Mon, 2014-04-21 17:35
The drag was playing up on my Stradic FJ 5000 so i took it apart to find one of the felt drag washers was shredded. Currently I just replaced the felt with some new for a temporary fix, but was wondering on thoughts of going to maybe carbonex washers or are there any other choices?

Yep,
get carbontex. Far superior drag washers IMO.

Carbontex are much smoother
Carbontex are much smoother (and will last longer) at higher drag settings.
Felt is smoother at lower drag settings.
I believe if you are pushing your stradic with big fish, often locking it up etc.... def go the carbontex.

Sounds like the carbontex
Sounds like the carbontex would be the go for that reel then. Thinking of buying it by the sheet to make my own washers but not sure on thickness I should be ordering?

Woah! If you look closely, the one on the left has a little smoke coming off it lol

Agree that carbontex are a
Agree that carbontex are a good option, though would not recommend them in high-end reels - Stella in particular. I replaced the worn standard washers in my 08 6000 stella with carbontex and the drag was awful, very sticky and could not get much pressure out of it. In the end I was able to get replacement Shimano washers from Shimreels on ebay, drag now back to as it was when I first got the reel.
Would be interested to hear if others have had similar experiences with their stellas...

The order was right (factory setup) could have been a possible faulty washer from factory. Cheers.

Make sure your metal washers
Make sure your metal washers are smooth with no grooving.
If you order the Carbontex as a set for that reel, at least you know you are getting the right thickness and they are not that expensive.
You may also be able to buy replacement upgrade metal washers from Smooth Drag.
As for grease, only use a dedicated drag grease. Anything else will just make matters worse.
If you really want to catch fish, go where there are no people.
