Eco-Tourism

Just heard someone from Curtin University on ABC News state that Eco-tourists spend twice as much than other tourists and thats why there needs to be Sanctuary Zones in the Southwest. His refference is the research done on the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park where the tourists like to dive with the whale sharks at an exorbitant cost. Down here we have the White pointer sharks and any time they want to free dive with them they are more than welcome just be sure to make out your will beforehand. Gee you hear some rubbish coming out of Curtin Uni.

the funny thing is

Tue, 2011-03-29 08:44

even before it was a marine park the whales were there! just because we call it a marine park doesnt meant the whales think WOW we are safe there lets go there! the whales have always been there and people would still pay ridiculas amounts to see them even if it wasnt a marine park!! the marine park isnt the attraction the whales are!!! isnt there thousands of people who head down south to watch whales every year?? thats not a marine park but they still go there because the whales are the attraction!  my god they will try anything to get there way!

I know this is a tangent

Tue, 2011-03-29 14:56

I know this is a tangent from the point of this post, but I have a question.

Why isn't there any companies based in Perth that take people out for shark dives?  The folks that do it in SA get like $2500 a head.  Seems we have more than a few White Pointers here.  You'd think it would be a pretty good racket.  Obviously, it would take some substantial startup capitol, but its not like there aren't any rich people in Perth!

any thoughts?

That's Academics for You

Tue, 2011-03-29 15:27

Most are afraid to leave the university because of a fear of having to survive and compete with everday people. Snappermiles is very correct in highlighting the real attractions for the ecotourists. It has nothing to do with marine parks. Most conclusions from academic research in My opinion are based around hypotheticals formed prior to the research. The research is done in such a way as to support the hypotheticals from the outset.

Not at all mate

The comment referred to above is in my opinion not based on any science and has no real relevance other than to distort the truth. It's something I see a lot when mixing with academincs (which I do a fair bit of). Having such opinion doesn't suggest that I have missed the cut somewhere as you suggest. It's an opinion and one I am entitled to.

If bigotted crap like that is any indication of why academics prefer institutions, rather than surviving out there with everyday people such as yourself, I might think they have a point.

Fortunately most people just aren't like you and don't seem that they have to discourage or prevent people from academic fields and just as well. Institutional research has provided us with many benefits, even ones enjoyed by deniers such as yourself.

You are entitled to your opinion, its just regrettable that the internet allows you to spread your message past your small, sad and cynical coterie.

Well Vince

so true and I for one totally agree with you.  People call us arm chair criticis, well guess what we have and do get out and see what the surroundings are all about.  As any good pro fisherman will say, with over 40+ years, he'll tell you what has changed in the ocean and what has not changed just like also good amatuer fisherman, ones that have had between 20 to 40 odd years of fishing and doing the right thing.

I sometimes also wonder about so called academics (experts) when they (DEC) can cull corellas, caught by net, then put them to death with a hose connected to the car exhaust,  takes about 12 minutes.  Well hello why didn't they capture them and give them to a wild life park to then sell to over seas buyers, recouping the costs inside of black market in our flora and fauna, don't need to be a academic (expert) to work that one out.

You really think that would

Wed, 2011-03-30 14:34

You really think that would work. They are culling thousands of these things. Good luck finding a facility that would house them all, they are not hand reared but wild birds probably not suitable for captivity. For the cost of some bird seed and running the motor for a bit, it's gotta be the cost effective way to go.
