EDIT - Went new :) opinions sought. cars - new vs used
This is sort of fishing related because I need a replacement vehicle to tow my boat so I can go fishing.
I have a fixed budget. as close to, or less than $20k.
must be cheap to run.
must be capable of towing at least 2.25 t.
I can buy a new 4X2 tata xenon cab chassis ute with a tray and fitted tow bar for $21k, with a four year / 100k warranty. 2.2l diesel that uses about 7.4l / 100 kms (combined urban). for about the same I can get a 2014 badged 4x4 tata xenon.
today I saw a 2007 Nissan navara diesel 2.5l 4 x 4. it ticks all the boxes I need. my dilemma is it has 207k on the odometer. and that's a fact my wife isn't keen spending money on. The navara is listed at $16,990.
interested in people's opinions. and please don't suggest spending more money. It's not an option.

I brought a 2009 bt50 a couple years ago with 100000kms on it and couldnt be happier as it only cost $24k with 3litre, all terrians, bullbar on it and snorkel. Got a hard lid off ebay for $300 to store stuff with lock. Nothing flash but tows the 6m ali, took it to steep point no worries, actually quite a good drive around town 11litre/100km in town is ok. No mechanical issues with it and had it for 2.5years so warrenty would have been irrelevant. Only issue is back seats dont have much room but I dont sit in there anyway!

The part about "always
The part about "always right" is what concerns me.... I know if I go used, and we have problems I'd never hear the end of it.....

I wouldn't buy a Tata if it was the last car available.

when they first
When they first got brought into the country, they failed to meet many of the Australian standards for motor vehicles, they've made some changes, but nowhere near enough to make them half way decent. Google some of the reviews and see what the experts say about them.

Personally wouldn't go the older Navara, particularly with so many km's on it.
Tritons around the 09/10 are apparently great.

I have spoken to a mechanic
I have spoken to a mechanic friend who works on the mines. says their cars are serviced every 30 days and mechanically very sound. problem with them is that the dust suppression wash down uses salt water, so they're full of rust.

I work on many different mine sites and I've yet to see any LV's with rust issues. And most places like Rio etc, the maintenance gets done by them quite often.

I've brought a few ex miners and all have been great. The only lemon I have got was a local ute that use to service the mines.

Use your $20K as a deposit
Use your $20K as a deposit on a $30k new triton or Navara and put a $10k balloon payment. No repayments for 3 years and you can decide to keep or trade then.

For what it's worth, I know
For what it's worth, I know a few people whom have picked up cars from Westside auto wholesale. You can buy at set prices before auction. My folks have an 100 series which is an ex miner and it has red dirt where I didn't know dirt could get.

I dealt with Brett Anderson
I dealt with Brett Anderson at Westside Auto at the stage I was ready to start knocking out dodgy car salesmen and found him to be brilliant (even if he did try to sell me tinting on a tinted car haha) and if you do you research he'll come to the party on a comparitive price.
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

Hi guys I'm a underground
Hi guys I'm a underground miner and you need to be very careful of buying a x mine vehicle as the ground water in a lot of the mining areas is very salty ..... Around the southern cross area down toward Hyden the ground water is ten times saltier than sea water ..... We use a lot of Toyota's as they stand up to the conditions but we only hang onto them for less than 2 years with a lot of services ...

Cant polish a turd!
Hi randell , Im a above ground miner , and still wouldnt touch a ex miner , unless you knew its history ( a security or bosses village car!)
I have always gone for proven quality over newness , in that I would rather buy a 5 year old stella for 600, instead of a new wizz bang whatever for 600 , if you get my drift.
Agree that mates are getting good runs out of those dmax/ colarados,----- jap based , isuzu 4wds and trucks have a long history of good engineering , solid motors etc etc
and if you found one with 100k or less with a f.s.h , for your money , that for me, would beat the tata, great wall route any day
Old ben franklin supposely said this------------------The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten!--------maybe he rode a great wall bike!

I work for mining company
I work for mining company and in charge of vehicle disposal. Most of ex mining Toyotas are badly corroded and in very bad nick. I wanted to buy them initially but after getting into this job, i wouldn't touch 'em!
Then again the mine site is only 30Km from the sea so that could be the reason.
Seeing how ppl abuse their cars on site will give an indication of the conditions of the used LVs.
My advice is to steer clear of ex mine vehicles unless you knew the history, like what quadfisher says.

Triton
Own 1 and love it, mine is an 08 3.2 turbo diesel which has 180thou k.s on the clock and it still drives very well and pulls my 18ft swiftcraft at 100km p/hr no worries. So I myself will vouch for 1.
I am lead to believe that the later models with the 2.5 ltr turbo diesel are very thirsty when towing.
I am currrently getting about 12l to the 100k's. Getting up there I know yet when i purchased it I was easily getting mid 10's. My mate the other day says to me as were
driving along the beach "you have squeezed this thing so hard and not a drop of lemon juice has come out of it". Made me laugh cause yes I do drive it pretty hard.
Good luck with your next purchase.

Ex hire vehicles
Hi Randell
check out the hire companys like raw, thrifty and such ,There are some great deals on these cars as the left overs from the boom.A mate picked up a 2012 hiux for just under 25k the other day and Rio have just handed a heap of cars to gregsons auctions so check there stock. There was another bloke at work who picked up a 2010 200 series for 28k pre auction (petrol). All these cars are port cars that have regular serviceing. Most of the rio cars have ivms in them so they are looked after very well or it could be your job.
There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it

iam not sure id spend 26k on
iam not sure id spend 26k on a 2wd ute but it is new and warranty is one of your concerns. i think you could find a whole bunch of second hand quality 4x4's for 26k and thats what i would do, just an opinion ofcourse.
would have thought 4x4 would be ideal for your trips away?
