electrics

hello people.. I have decided to change my electrics in my tub. I Have two batteries,  an isolation switch ( batt 1, batt 2, both and off switchies). I got a cluster of six switchies for gps, bilge pump, sounder etc. Can any one point me in the right direction with a simplified drawing or info on how to set it up please. Wat I would like is wen I put isolation switch to off, everything is off. I find my battery is always flat every time I go out.. thanks in advanc guys...Don

ignore the "alternator","battery isolator",  and the 2 wires going to it in the diagram.

the isolater switch should be for your positive terminals only, so run both of your batteries +ive (positive) leads to it, and have one common coming out of it, that goes to a busboard

have a small bus board for your negative terminals as well.

run a lead from your +ive and -ive bus boards to your cluster switch (switching panel/distribution panel) mains, then run everything off that.

that diagram above is for the battery isolation switch. it is just showing the back of the switch, and where/how to run your batteries into it.

once you have hooked up the switch like it is in the picture, you will then decide which battery(s) you operate off, either batt 1, batt 2, both off, or both on

something for new players...

if you have had your electrics professionally wired, some fitters run a memory wire direct from the battery's +ive terminal, bypassing the isolation switch. they do this, as some stereos loose preset radio stations when the operator switches the isolation switch off.

by doing so, they keep their preset radio stations, but if yopu get a leak in that wire, can flatten a battery in a day or 2.

not really

if you want to go down that path, you should look into a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) switch, which does all the switching and controlling for you, but they are $250+ and onwards. good bit of kit though. they generally keep your motor (main) battery fully charged as a priority, and then direct charge to your house (instruments) battery after that

otherwise, just start your motor on battery 1, then swap to battery 2 to run your instruments.

only down side to doing that is your motor battery is not getting charged, which should be the priority. no point having a fully charged battery for your GPS, if your motor doesnt start to bring you home again!
