Elite5 Issue
Submitted by GeeDog on Fri, 2018-04-27 16:43
Hi All
Just wondering if anyone has seen this on an Elite-5 before.
These are shots heading up the Murray, shallow water at below 5knots.
Got similar in the ocean in 20m of water. Seems to be working fine then a couple of minutes of rubbish then good again. Depth set to auto, also tried custom range etc. Cables appear fine, no worn areas or kinks. fg
Tried resets, cleaning the transducer etc etc.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks FlangiesWas
Thanks Flangies
Was intermittent on the way up but got worse on the way back and that was after turning the unit off for about an hour. Mid line of the transducer lines up nicely with the bottom of the hull and the rear is slightly down. Just cant figure whether its the head unit or transducer.

Change the settings to show
Change the settings to show voltage on the screen, could be a loose power source/earth

No worries, remember though
No worries, remember though when faultfinding ANYTHING-simple cheap and obvious things first.
If your getting rid of ya dodgy sounder Ill give ya $50 for it
Otherwise onto what the others are saying, in sequence.
Wiggle cables connections and any data links while someone watches screen.
Does it only do it in the water while steaming, or also while drifting, then also when on trailer out of water?
Generally shouldnt run them out of water but mainly I think because they arent cooled-ok for a short time.
Try high and low freq to see if its both

I've had exactly the same on an Elite-7
It would just happen randomly, can't remember exactly what I did to get rid of it. All I can recall is that it was seemingly associated with auto range and big changes in depth, IIRC.

Hard reset
Have you tried doing a reset on the unit to see if that fixes it

Same Same
Mine does exactly the same. I've tried everything mentioned above. Different batteries, cleaned plugs, checked cables and still the same issue. Totally random when it happens.

Solution Found
Well after much googling and testing without success, I figured my cheapest option was to get a hold of a replacement transducer. After installing it everything is working well again, it no longer loses bottom and is picking up features.
The interesting thing when googling about all this was the amount of talk about whether transducers can 'wear out' and therefore produce a lesser signal or maybe not receive it as well.
After installing the new transducer I think this maybe the case. One of the things with my broken transducer was that even when finding bottom, I could turn sensitivity up to 100% and get absolutely no 'noise' but with the new transducer turning sensitivity up to 100% would fills the screen.
Anyway thank you to those that offered their help, it was greatly appreciated.
