Entry level jigging for demersals

I've recently had the opportunity to go fishing every week out to Rotto and I've realised this is a good way for me to get into jigging.

I'm looking for advice on the right gear and jigs. At the moment I have a Shimano Cazna 4000 with about 3/4 of a 300m spool of PE4 Sunline and I switch this between an old Penn Powerspin rod and a 7ft Jarvis Walker Aquatec depending on what I'm doing. I'm wanting a rod that will allow me to chase Snapper and Dhus without paying an arm and a leg.

As for jigs, I have a couple of knife jigs and I was given a Shimano Lucanus 100g which I'm really eager to try, but I've heard the Octa jigs are a better option. Soft plastics are also something I wanna test out. Thanks and tight lines in advance !

Can't see why the Cazna wont

Can't see why the Cazna wont be fine for a while although I would respool with something a bit lighter if you can get it cheaply. (smaller diameter line keeps the jigs in the zone for longer)

As for the rod ...that's where you should spend the money with jigging IMO. look for something PE 1-3
I would look for something medium taper. can quite often pick up a second hand jig rod on here for under $100 Eupro/JM etc

I started with a JM sabre game and has caught plenty of fish (just a backup rod now as I prefer a bit of a faster taper for demersals)

As for jigs. easiest start is octa's and pirates (they seem to work themselves) Im still yet to use the lucanus myself but have a few now so will find out soon :)
