The best ones are the GPS enabled ones. You have to pay a bit extra for them but they are accurate to the nearest 100 meters. The non-GPS ones are only accurate to 5 km. If I was lost at sea I know which one I would want.
As for which brand is better, they are all built to Australian standards so I don't think it would make a big difference. The KTI Safety Alert ones are cheaper than GME and have a longer battery life. GME is probably a better known brand though.
When I looked there wasn't a big difference between prices on Ebay and prices at the shops, so probably better to get it locally.
...going by that title I thought someone wanted to trade a jetski for an EPIRB! Anyway, got mine (for a boat) at Mandurah Outboards but forget what I paid for it, so fat lot of good that does for you...
I looked into Handheld/Jacket Epirbs last month for Ski fishing, the only problem is that when you check on Marine& Harbours rules and regulations site, you will see that they are not approved for Marine use in Australia.
So you would still have to carry a Approved Epirb and get it registered as well.
I have now brought the GME Epirb and attached it to the rod holder rack, easy access if I every need to use it.
