Even More Ambers

Me  and my Brother in law went out, with Daz and Chrisp following later.

Very windy in the morning, we left at 8.30 but had to hang inshore for about 45 minutes until the patience wore thin and we headed out. Strong north easterly, but it died right down half way to Rotto and by the time we reached Rotto it was light winds, and stayed that way all day....we came home in an almost glassoff. EXCELLENT!

Fishing was a bit tough. Fish on the sounder, but had to work very hard for the fish, but we had it much easier than others it would seem. Spoke with Justonemore cast and Justin out there, both had a hard time and not sure if they boated a fish despite a LOT of jigging.

It was my bro in law’s first time jigging……he gave up on jigging after 15 minutes on his Torium 30 completely stuffed (I did warn him it would be tough work on that gear...) so I put him on live baits which were also slow but did get two nice Ambers, so he was happy.

I got 3 ambers to the boat on jig, lost another 2 to sharks (got one jig back.....munched....), lost another and 120 m of brand new YGK braid to an incorrect drag setting on my spanking new Ocea Jigger (which was pure SWEETNESS!!!!!) and my favourite  jig....got hit about another 4 times for no hookup…..so it was tough, but worth while.

Daz  Chrisp and one of their mates did better than us on Team Prowler….good fishos those boyz!

At the end of the day, just after Daz and Chrisp left and we were the only boat left, I had probably the best fishing experience I have ever had.....had just packed all the gear away, Daz was just heading out of sight over the horizon and we were feeling like a very small boat on a very big, dead flat ocean, we started the motors and started to drive off and all hell broke loose....Ambers busting up on the surface everywhere, smashing baitfish all around the boat. There were hundreds of Ambers within meters of the baot. With all rods packed away except my Tierra flick rod with a McCarthys paddle tail (rigged for tuna) I flung it out, and got SMASHED on the surface with a big massive splash...awesome! Great fight on the light gear.

Will remember those 15 minutes for a long time!

Thu, 2010-11-04 13:56

Yep that was me out with Daz n Chris. Daz sent me a msg when we got home and said they came to the surface just after we left...spewing!!

Was harder work than a couple weeks back but still managed around 5 or 6 ambers each for the day!

All good high end jap jigs seemed all the difference...and one on a pearl dildo for CP

Hi Sam, wondering who it

Thu, 2010-11-04 14:31

Hi Sam, wondering who it was! Once I lost my favourite Jap jig and the second one got mangled by a shark (managed to get the jig back as it cut the assist but made a mess of the jig and broke it in half ...) I was back to cheap and cheefuls (except one VERY exxxy JAP jig that has never got a hit..................much harder work for sure.

Apart from that, it became obvious in the end of the day I had been fishing the wrong vertical section of water, and it now all makes sense as to why you boys were dropping at the same time as me, but starting the retrieve twice as early....ask Daz about my pathetic sounder depth range settings.........hahaha, traps for young players!

Cheers

John

Good day out! Conditions

Thu, 2010-11-04 17:19

Good day out! Conditions were mint. It gave me the opportunity to have 3 in the prowler. The prowler performed well & we enjoyed getting several fish each.

The ambers actually responded well to slowly worked jigs. Lighter gear got more touches but the sharks were sitting under the school which made things hard if one stripped too much line.

John, I'm still laughing about your sounder ordeal... very funny indeed.

Looking forward to another outing. I'll be packing a few stickbaits next time.

I reckon they'd be partial

Thu, 2010-11-04 17:25

I reckon they'd be partial to surface offerings if the boat crowd was thin. We registered some schools about 15m under the boat.

Still very sorry about that. I know it was your best coloured jig in your bag.

Oh, and don't worry, I lost 1 of mine too... so we're even.

Sounds like some great

Thu, 2010-11-04 20:32

Sounds like some great conditions out there, pity you didn't get into them more. You needed the stradic out there to bring them on! haha

The surface action would have been aweeeesome, typical that it happened as you had all the rods packed up!

Yeah Ben, surface action caught us by surprise but still managed to grab the Tierra terror flick rod and load up on an angry Amber on surface....memorable stuff indeed.
