Exmouth 2018 done and dusted
Well thats exmouth for 2018.
Tough time with the southwesterly winds this year and a swell that was breaking across the north chanel on the first day making us turn for home. We lost a couple of days to wind but turned those into beer days
With the winds up making trolling for bills to uncomfortable, deep dropping was the next plan and we did well. Loading our freezers with our limit of ruby and 8 bar fillets made this a great trip none the less. Minimal issues with sharks made life easy.
Still managed to raise a handful of small black marlin and chrisG getting to issue his first tag on a acrobatic little rat marlin was a plus.
Make sure you hit up mick and the boys at shore catch for quality bait, we had ordered some squid for this trip and man they were huge ruby lollies. We tried herring for first time this year and the 8 bar demolished them. Thanks again mick callum and hutch.
If your looking for accommodation close to tantabiddi ramp then i suggest yardie homestead. The new managers have got the place looking great and enjoy a beer. Being 2min from the ramp is huge bonus
Not a great amount of photos and funny how water looks calm in these pics.
Already planning nexts year trip

Yep, all deep dropping done
Yep, all deep dropping done within a 20 min steam out of tantabiddi
killed it on deep dropping this trip. literally ran out of room on the boat for more fish one of the days, with a few hundred litres of esky and cooler bag space completely full-up....big Ruby’s and big big Greyband will do that to ya
We gave up deep dropping at our trip limit but no issues finding fish whatsoever...even with a sounder unable to mark bottom due to having the motor in reverse foaming up the water....(reverse required just to hold bottom cause the weather was rubbish!!!!).

First day greyband were
First day greyband were 250-270 and Ruby’s were 270-300, other days Ruby’s were 230-250. You can see fish rather than ground on sounder mate. Mark them on gps and the just drift that ground. As I said once we were drifting we had no sounder picture as we had it in reverse so much....

Great report and awesome fish
Great report and awesome fish guys. I'm heading there in 2 weeks and staying at Yardi Homestead for April school holidays. Trying out deep dropping for the first time so this is great info thanks.
If I may ask did you stick to any particular location when targeting the Ruby's or (i.e North towrds the rigs) or mainly just fish the depths and sound around?
So looking forward to our trip now after seeing these photos awesome stuff!

Mate best advice I can give
Mate best advice I can give you is sound around in the depths mentioned above. Don’t look for lumps just depth changes and drop offs. If you’ve got your sounder tuned in you’ll see the fish within 5 metres of the bottom (bottom lock is your friend). I’m no sounder expert and rely heavily on gillys patience to spend the time dialing it in, but after a couple of trips now I’d be confident to do.
I know a lot of guys go north and south and steam some serious miles for deep drop spots up there and maybe we’re just lucky but we’ve hit good ground with 20-30 minutes of tantabiddi channel for two years in a row now and we’ve done pretty good. Last year we were just trying something new and did okay, this year we had more of an idea and did pretty good so I’m sure you’ll nail it this trip or next... the key for me I reckon is slow down your drift and keep your line straight down - use you motor rather than sea anchor if need be. Second thing is big quality baits..Gilly mentioned shore catch and to be honest I’m sure his baits made a massive difference...on one of our more successful days we took another boat with us...we put them on the marks, they drifted the same speed and same ground and I even made up their rigs for them....we killed it, they didn’t boat a single fish! Only diff being we used quality baits they used shitty small squids and mulies.

Top Stuff, thanks Chris
Top Stuff, thanks Chris thats great advice I really appreciate it.
I'll be sure to stock up on the Shore Catch squid, I agree i think good baits make a huge difference. I pretty keen to get up there, we are there from the 14th - 26th April so hopefully we get some luck with the wind conditions. Can't wait.
Thanks again, I'll report back post our trip!

Great report mate.
Planning on deep drop in Exmouth for the first time next month. Was curious as to what size weights you needed to fish those depths? I will be definitely visiting Mick at shore catch for some bait as I’ve already used his quality baits in the past.
Cheers, Kuzi.

We used chunks of cut up
We used chunks of cut up trailer axle. Anywhere from 1 - 2 kilo depending on drift speed. With the boat in reverse fighting the wind and swell we used our heavier weights. Try to get to the bottom as fast as possible

I’m planning on seeing Mick next week at Shorecatch for some squid. Any other baits you can recommend?
