Exmouth...is it now the paradise lost for the amateurs??
I have just come back from Exmouth and I have to say i'm pretty dissapointed :(
I'm going to hit this one from two fronts...one tourist...one fishing...!!
Tourist: -
15 years ago I worked in the pilbara/kimberley (before this monster mining boom began!!;) and the region was in full growth back then....
Karratha/Headland established themselves as business centres because they represented the financial heart of WA.
Broome is a tourist precinct and the Palms, Mango trees and relaxing attitude is what makes it touristy and comfortable...
Dampier has an agricultural feel
Enter Exmouth..so much potential and so much a disappointment. I came here about 15 years ago ang nothing seems to have changed..
If Exmouth wants to grow as a town it needs to develop the tourist edge and lose it's lazy mentailty..It's miles behind..!..!
Fishing: -
We took a 9 m boat out way past the Muirons and came with what I would consider a shame..2 Macks, a remora (have never ever seen someone catch a remora but my cuz did) and one great leatherjacket.
The humpbacks were great but I didn't come here for something that big..!!
All in all pretty pissed off..
I guess i'm just an amature that just wanted to catch one decent fish and got hip and sholdered out of the contest by local knowledge..
I'm beginning to understand "local knowledge"...!!

I love Exmouth for its lak of huge shopping centres, millions of people, traffic and all the other garbage this 24hr 7days a week world brings. I love the way you can get away from everything. Ive been several times and other than on the charter boat have never caught heaps of fish but you can sit on the bach in the sun in peace and have a beer and a smoke without being told off by coppers or harrased by brainless yobo. These days that is getting harder and harder to find. To each there own but if I wanted to be harrased and set upon by millions of people with shopping opportunitys everywhere I go deal with the the stress that is bali.

I have been going to Exmouth
I have been going to Exmouth for the past 6 years, and yes the first couple we didn't get much still a feed but once you click on how it works and get some spot. This year we got 80kg of fillets between us and released just as much, all good fish rankin, coral trout, reds. We found new spots every day and got fish on them all. I do as i do in perth no drifting just jump from school to school, patch to patch the smaller the better .As for Exmouth just the place for fuel, and food .I will be back next year and for years to come . You just need to learn how to fish the place .Next year will be more diving and trolling for billies ,And chasing tuna in the gulf .3-4 days bottom fishing will get our fillets for the trip home .

Yes Paul we will be back same
Yes Paul we will be back same time next year with the Greek Caterer and your good self + a few other regulars having a ball catching and releasing almost all of the fish, just like last year!
Funny to see that some junior cannot catch good fish over there and then go on a slagging sezz here on Fishwrecked.
And Yes I am one of the bald Grey nomads and an off shore Pig, pulling my boat up to Exy and not always doing 110KM/h that seems to annoy the blek commodore ute or fourby brigade .
Suck it up sunshine!

Great Place
I've been to Exxie a couple of times enjoyed it. I don't have a boat so LB for me. Mainly went for a Holiday and a look around. I personally like smaller quieter places to get away from the rat race. Exxie has all you need for living and tourism, if the people don't like it they move on. As for fishing as mentioned before thats what it's called not catching. You may have had all the right gear and been on the "right spot" but if the fish aren't bitting than your out of luck. No reason to not give it another try. Is there more pressure on stocks around Exxie than else where, I'm not sure about that. There's going to be more commercial growth in and around Exxie, for better or worse time will tell. If you start comparing towns and fishing locations everyone has their favourites but you don't know if you don't go. There are a lot of other "sleepy" towns up and down the WA coast that haven't changed for many years and some that have exploded in size. As for knocking Exxie off your list of places to go that's your personal choice and I don't think anyone will care to much. The locals and fisho's that have spent many hours searching for their spots aren't normally going to hand over that info. You could possibilly link up with a local or travel with someone who's been up that way before. As for handing out insults and abuse you'll get it back in spades. Hope you have more luck on future trips. Remember enjoy the journey as much as the catching.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

Exmouth is one of my
Exmouth is one of my favourite places in the world and hope it never changes! I have been up there and caught verry little but have been up there and killed the pig. Each time I have encountered something great and there is always a story to be had. In stead of going up with great expectations of giant fish go up with the view to have fun! after all is that why we all fish?
One piece of advice is spend time trolling- You have lines in the water for pelagics but your also sounding out new ground.
Good luck for next time

We are in Exmouth for
We are in Exmouth for repairs now. We are the biggest vessel to ever come in here 676 GRT we are using all local tradesman(12 tradies on the boat today).
If they have let us in here and it all goes with out a hiccup can guarantee we wont be the last.
Im sitting on the fence with this one i used to spend 4 months a year in exmouth in the late 90s and remember it for what it was then, the joint has definately gone ahead in leaps and bound of the last 5 years.
Towns can barely survive on Grey Nomads and Tourism so i think the offshore industry using exmouth as a maintenance type depot could be a good thing from the town perspective.
But i would hate to see it turned into a major port Dampier/Port Headland style. And i honestly cant see it happening Wheatstone is the next big project about to kick off and that will all be around Onslow in close proximity to the main hwy. Exmouths Isolation by road will save it.
If not long live the memorys.
Cheers Boomer

I find it strange
I find it strange how someone can move to a coastal town and start calling everyone else blowin's(tourists)like the town is there's.The movie deliverance comes to mind...

SNAP!!
WOW.... I didn't think this thread was going to get so viral??
I seriously didn't think I could get the serious answers I was looking for from this thread...which by the way is only an online (anonymous) thread....!!..For the most part?!?!
I questioned those on my post about Exmouth on its ability to support growth, tourism and sustainable fishing and I must say you all came through in flying colours albeit agresssively at times!!
For the record, I am no student trying to gain points analysis people for my thesis...!!
HOWEVER..I did get what I needed to serve my purpose????
