gaff and release

Mon, 2012-12-10 15:59

Fair bit of blood to release the hammers, were they gaffed, also I dont think the big ray needed to be dragged up the beach just for a photo, cutting them off in shallow water would do

Well done

Nice work mate. You're obviously putting the hours in and are reaping the rewards.

Having caught a big ray in south africa once (about 1.5m across) I know only too well how much work it takes to get one that size in. Well done.

Nice, some good fights there. How long did it take you to get the ray in? I bet you're arm was dead after that one mate. Was down there the other day and got a few strong runs with no hookups tho!

harsh

Sorry I thought looking after fish was responsible, dragging the ray onto the beach with a gaff does not seem to be, I will gaff the next sambo I get and release it after a photo

poor ray

Thu, 2012-12-13 09:28

agree costaljoy. The Ray would have been better released without gaffing and draging up beach. Then regaffed to be put back in water. Nice pics young fella, you must enjoy you fishing. There are plenty of non fishers out there that could make a bad story of a ray on the beach like that. As fishermen we need to be carefull an thoughtfull with what we do with fish. It is in all our interests.

assuming

Thu, 2012-12-13 09:42

well you guys are assuming he used it.  that gaff is being used to keep the barb down in that picture and I cant see any holes in the ray.

a light weight aluminium gaff like that isnt capable of controlling a stingray of that size.

The bloke puts up a post of some captures he is proud of and cops unsubstantiated negative comments, do you think he will bother again? probably not!  Nothing illegal going on there, didnt your mummies ever tell you "if you havent got anything nice to say dont say it at all"

Look closer

Looks like two gaff markes on front of ray. How else are you going to get that sort of weight up a beach. 200lb line wouldnt drag that ray up sand. Least it was released. Seen  plenty of rays just left on the beach to rot.

Some great catches there mate!

Dont stress about the haters, best to avoid the gaff where possible but thats not always an option.

Nice work!
