finally got my new toy

hey guys

after a couple of months of saving i finally got my new toy(hds8) to go along with my hds10, got the cable so they talk to each other and share all info.

they are both combo's, so i have 2xgps & 2x sounders, i had a gps fail on me at night once so i like the idea of a back-up, a little bit more saving to buy another gold card because they will not share the one card, yer i know you dont need it but why not??? better than taking it out and putting it in the other.

because im running a 600w wet box and a 600w transom mount i will try them out and see if the hull of the boat makes a differance?, its going to be alot better than my old navman 6600 and having to manualy transfer waypoints.

now to find some fish for the comp...ha ha ha ha, might need a couple more units for that!!

cheers ron

Dont think you would be able

Dont think you would be able to run both transducers at the same time, but probably easier switching than installing the whole electronics to switch.

Interesting the chart seems to show a 3d contour/shading effect on the land though. Is that on the card, or in the unit?

thats on the card mate, there

thats on the card mate, there is a 3d button to turn on but in that pic it is off.

i ran the two trannys in demo at the same time and no probs, you can also run the one tranny via network, but becuase of other issuse i had when installig the 10(in another older post) i ended up with 2 trannys anyway, so thats the reason for the 2.

of course only 1 tranny per unit at one time, but the idea is my 10 will be the sounder and the 8 as gps, my old navman was good but just would not talk to the 10 and the hds's gps is very good, much better than my navman

Have a navionics gold but

Sat, 2011-06-11 20:23

Have a navionics gold but didnt seem to remember it having that option. Maybe my unit doesnt support that though. Not exactly a required feature though.

In demo mode, arent the sounders only displaying example data, not actually pinging out? I would imagine that the pings of one would get picked up by the other if you ran both at the same frequency?

yes mate you could be

yes mate you could be right?

only one way to find out! they will be used seperatly 99% of the time anyway but you bring up a valid point, will give it a go next tim on the blue and see what happens.

on the 3d thing it might also be because i was zoomed out a fair bit and it might be the colors playing tricks on ya, i will also have a better look next time, but as you say id dont matter anyway.

just need to find fish with them now?

Easy fix if you are going to

Sun, 2011-06-12 09:50

Easy fix if you are going to run both tranny's then change one to a different khz otherwise you will get interference. I have the Lowrance combo as my primary GPS Plotter but also have a transducer in case the Furuno sounder ever fails. At times I have switched the Lowrance sounder on to get the most accurate position I can on a little lump but don't run them on 200 together as the Lowrance has a freak out.

So what are you planning to do with yours Ron? I guess with them talking to each other you can leave the HDS 8 as pure plotter & use the 10 for your sounding & it will send the marks across??

yes mate thats it.and i will

Sun, 2011-06-12 13:02

yes mate thats it.

and i will run the 8 in 50khz so that will sovle that, if i get interferanc i will run the one tranny via the network.

i will have a play(with the hds's) and see what happens, but i still might get a better outcome playing with the other thing!!!

Yeah have been pretty happy

Sun, 2011-06-12 08:59

Yeah have been pretty happy with my HDS5x until last week.  I was coming back in from the bank (going bout 25knts) and it starting cutting out then only now and then picking up a signal.  And when it did find a signal it was in black and white:(

I thought I might of had something on the transducer though I check it when I got back in and it was fine.  Anyone else had this problem with a HDS unit?  Have only had it for 18months or so...

we did have an issue with

Sun, 2011-06-12 09:29

we did have an issue with the HDS5x a couple of years ago.  We were up north and it kept loosing the GPS.  Took it back to where we bought it and they upgraded the software to the latest version and it hasn't missed a beat since.

There has been an upgrade recently which we have done as well which has made it quite a bit smoother
