finance on accessories???

Mate of mine just got a boat and of course never thought about the extras and accessories etc you need. ( yip we all did it the first time..) so he has a nice boat with no rocket launchers, no gps, no sounder, no radio, no bait board etc…..

Anyways, he asked me if any of the dealerships do packages on payment plans or finance for a sounder / gps combo set up????

I said I did not know of any…Then started to think  how every store around town is offering 6 months to 48months, even interest free 12months, no payments for 6months deals etc… on everything from washing machines to colour flat screens to beds to couches to Ipads to even the kitchen sink. But nothing going in the marine game!!!

Maybe this is an option for the dealers who are feeling the pinch in sales and can get GE finance or United Credit Union etc onboard. Many of us would love to upgrade stuff, but forking out $1000 to $3000 in one hit can hurt like a bugger, when spaced over a year or two it can be much more affordable.

So any thoughts from our dealers and marine suppliers out there??????

Surely a personal loan would have better rates than finance anyways? Plus better fees than those interest free offers (hey, don't pay anything for 24 months then when you've forgotten, we'll sting you as we backdate all interest charges at a huge rate).

Backdated interest at huge rate, monthly fees, early payment fees, untransferrable: http://www.savingsguide.com.au/store-credit-cards-with-australian-retailers/

If you use a credit card and balance transfer to a new one you can get a cheaper rate than a loan but only do it if you're 100% sure you can pay it off.

if you put yourself in a position where you had to pay interest on GE finance, you don't need a lot of discipline to avoid doing that IMO

fair idea Tony,

Like Paully says - you dont have to be too disciplined to make it work. And most of the finance deals are free of any charges and you dont even have to pay any deposit or interest. Only the slackers who miss the payments can get slugged with a chunk of interest on the total amount. Why spend a year saving a few grand when you can buy it up front and chip away at it each month.

some of the bigger shops that use finance options might even be able to get some of the accesories that you are looking for (sounders, gps, radios, etc.) as they would sell other equipment from those manufacturers. Its worth asking. But I dont think you would have much luck getting a bait board from Harvey Norman - unless you wanted a jarrah one.

will be interesting to see what the dealers / shops say.

yes I told Jac to go the credit card route, but he is worried that it's a spiral into the darkness of fishing bebt...lol

I agree the personal loan is the better way to go, but you end up spending more time and effort that it's worth when you working and need to go into their offices 3 ~4 time to get it all sorted. I know cause I have one with UCU.

Where store credit can be done on a saturday morning and be over and done with in 30min. We bought our fridge / dishwasher / microwave that way when we first came out here in 2004. It was simple, easy and no hassle.

The point I am making is not soo much the credit options for the buyer, but that none of the marine dealers, all crying broke with low sales this last year, that they have not come up with any schemes or simple ways of making things affordable to the mass market like the white-good stores and pc-stores etc have done.  Hell it would be nice to buy that fancy jigg rod&reel combo and pay it off over 6 months or even 12 months. I have kept my jigg gear for four seasons now, so good gear lasts!!!!

The problem with the GE

Wed, 2011-01-05 13:04

The problem with the GE "Style" of buy now pay later reverts on the dealer actually paying for the interest up front. So ie if i was to say I'll sell you this for 6 months interest free i would pay about 7% for the 6 months. Works fine if you have high turnover and good profit margins. But if you don't have turn over than it doesn't work. Mercury actually did this with outboards about 9 years ago and no one took up the option as it relied on you buying it retail prices..
