Finding Whales
Submitted by Cammos on Mon, 2010-09-06 20:57
My wife has asked to go out with the kids to spy some whales. Is there any tricks to "find" them, or is it just a matter of cruising around until they show? Any depths or locations I should head for?

No ideas on finding them so
No ideas on finding them so to speak, I have tended to keep a keen eye out for the spray of water when they surface and then head over. On Sunday we had one surface near us in about 50m of water at Direction Bank whilst getting ready for a drift. Had some amazing experiences at the Monties, just amazing creatures.

mother and calf
we had a mother and calf just going bananas today not far from our dive spot! as usual tho once we had drifted into range with the cameras the jumping and tail slapping ceased and they cruised off... one of natures best sights i think watching whales in the wild strutting there stuff!

They seem to be everywhere
up and down the coast. Up here you just about have to dodge them out near the Iron ore ship anchorage. And even had a mum and babe playing in Mermaid Sound and infront of Pluto the other day.

Had one come up right by the boat on the weekend between Hillarys and Quinns Rock. Then a few minutes later it breached in a big way.
Great to watch!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

No Boaters
For the non boaters Point Piquet round from Dunsborough towards Eagle bay is the spot.
The regularly travel within 50 metres of the point on their way north out of Geographe bay on the way back down south. If you look around you will see the whale watching boats not too far out because it is the easiest spot for them to find them without burning fuel going looking.

Sorry
Carnarvonite but i am talking non boating, the lookout at other side of the moon (cape Naturaliste) is probably the best Whale watching spot i've seen. Decent elevation and great panoramic views
Piquet's not bad, can have a rod in your hand too.

Calm
Its all calm water and they swim passed you about 50 metres away and you are only metres from the shore.
