A fire works free Australia Day
Submitted by Shorty on Sun, 2011-01-16 13:41
Theres being a push towards having a fireworks free Australia day around Australia and donating the millons of dollars instead towards the flood victims in Carnarvon,QLD, N.S.W and now Victoria, i would also make the suggestion to divert some of the $500,000,000 earmarked for Muslims schools in Indonesia, i think its time Australians looked after Australians in time of need and not splashing our tax dollars all over the place.
I don't think missing fireworks will kill us.

seeing that the australia
seeing that the australia day fireworks and such has aready been planned and payed for months ago why suggest such a thing ?? .. do you really think the guys that have spent the last year setting it up and making the fireworks etc are going to go bankrupt just because youve asked nice ??
im not trying to be too nasty here but how about we ask your business to work your ass off planning something for a whole year then pull out at the 12 hour and refuse payment ..

Well another option would be
Well another option would be to have registerd collectors at vantage points and collect money for the victims.
I don't mind foriegn aid Till, but how much of that 500 millon will go to the schools and not into the pockets of corrupt Indonesian officials ?
We have problems looking after own own schools and hospitals and urgently require funding,,whats wrong with Australian government looking after Australians for a change ?

i agree with your schooling
i agree with your schooling topics .. but dont forget where we live .. "the lucky country"
we can work for our money and afford cool toys and cars .. some of the people we help dont have schools and luxury items we take for granted ..
yes our schools could be better or our hospitals .. but hey if you have a problem with any of that you can use the private schools and hospitals .. they are better and you get what you pay for ..
IMO we are doing it pretty well here ..

Interesting Feral
"Some of the people we don't help........." , so you should be talking about the people in this country that have suffered recently and don't have, as you say, luxury items anymore (Isn't that what the post is about) - Thoughts? , not to mention all the pensioners living on the bones of their ass in this country. dont you have insurance ? i
dont you have insurance ? i live in flood affected area here in busselton and i can tell you im insured .. if it floods here again all im taking is my photo albums and my computer portable hard drives with photos on them.
we flooded here about 8 years ago and my family home was in the thick of it . and my brother is in Qld on the outskirts of this current flood .. if your a flash flood victim then i feel for you .. but there is no excuse in my book for stupidity of living in a flood area and not being insured .. JMO

Collectors running away with
Collectors running away with the dosh? You can't be serious, do we really have corruption, crime and graft here too, just like you think might happen Indonesia? In that case, don't give.
OMG, there could be a lesson there in that.
Australia commits a fairly paltry 0.3% of GDP to foreign aid, the UN recommends 0.7% and America only manages 0.19%.

and America only manages 0.19%.
Not getting into a political stoush here, but the amount of damage America has caused some parts of the world with their continuous war for oil,
0.19% seems to pale into significance really.

There will be people
There will be people collecting for the floods victims. E.g. Variety are collecting funds for "sick, disadvantaged and special needs children and their families affected by this natural disaster.". You can also sign up to shake a tin here.
There may be other people collecting too. Various shops have collections, some are donating profit on some days (managed to buy a bit from one). Also, various charities will have online donations pages if you want to help too.
BTW, heres the Major's message.
As for the spreading things you see on facebook. Always good to check into first instead of just clicking :p

So do we give 500,000,000 to
So do we give 500,000,000 to indonesia?
If thats true, it could hold the answer to the boat people problem.
Hold back the aid and let the police over there stop the boats. If they stop all but a couple of boats slipping through, continue aid.
A bit harsh, yes. But maybe it could work?
The corrupt cut of 500 million must be more than the cut from the people smugglers?

Do you really think Australia
Do you really think Australia would be funding extremist islamic schools? The vast majority of Islamic schools are nothing like that and more like private schools we have here (which are nominally religious). Link.

Well President Suharto
Well President Suharto amassed a fortune estimated at between 35 -73 billon dollars when he was in office,,
We now have President SBY in office,, called me a pessimist but i don't think much of that will get to where its needed,,
But to answer the question yes i think some might fall into the wrong hands and go to a school that looks above board and is not, unlikely but still possible,,

Sorry Dom,
what did you say? - i was having a snooze. When you get old and cranky like me you finally realise what loathsome scum MOST politicians are. Since Tim Fisher left the scene no one other than Mal Brough has shown any balls. What a joke - Mal " Lost Me Dacks " Fraser is regarded as a world statesman, Paul Keating was Suharto's best mate, our goverment as good as colluded with the Indonesians over Balibo, Bob Brown is making political mileage over 16 bodies - and so on and so on and you and i can't do a thing about it. Feel your vote counts? It does, but only to whichever moral vacuum you voted for.

I'm afraid I'm a bit
of a pessimist, just hope the money collected does go to Carnarvon and Qld floods.
My heart was so proud to see all the volunteers over the week end, total strangers helping total strangers, thats the Aussie spirit, love this country.
Till you read on perthnow how the poor illegal aslyum seekers are getting bored, getting upset cos they have to share a TV or internet gggggrr I'm not saying any more on that subject.

Fireworks
Just gettin back on the subject...Our super country will do what it can to help those in the floods, and taking fireworks off the people won't be one of them!!! Our Aussie spirit will just find a way, like we always do...
As for whinging about our government, I reckon a little criticism won't hurt them, just keep them on their toes!!!
