First fish on plastics in W.A
Headed out sunday morning for my first fish of the year. Went out from hilarys left the ramp at around 5ish.
Sounded around north of rotto for a bit found some okayish ground. Dropped the baits down nothing but wrasse. Moved a bit deeper done a few drifts, picked up a black arse and a mate picked up a baldie ( no photo's sorry!) Got the shits with pulling up nothing but wrasse. So decided to give plastics ago. Have been using plastics for years back home in brisbane for flathead. Picked up some "pacific pearl" squidgy flick baits from compleat angler nedlands (I love that place, bank account not so much) only because I was reading a fishing mag at work last week and remember seeing them and thought, yeah why not.
Grabbed my stradic 2500 spooled with .8 varivas and 20 pound leader on a strudwick sic stick 2-5kg. First drop down few winds and bang i was on! It had a run straight to the boat and I dropped it. Pulled it up to make sure it was still there, dropped back down, few winds again and bang of it goes again! pulled it up from 40M and up came a skippy. Stoked! Not at a skippy but I actually pulled something up with a placcy. 20mins later and a captain morgan or 2 down and bang on again. Not much fight but felt a bit heavier and first dhu! Beauty. Not size so it doesn't count I know but stoked it was working for dhu. Measured in at 40 or so and safely released.
Moved to another spot another morgan down and bang on again bit more weight this time and another dhu! Again not size at around 45cm or so, another safe release.
Not alot of fish, still newish to over here so trying to find ground. But was still a good day. I caught a few fish on placcys and dodged all the wrasse haha! Safe to say I'm hooked on plastics! Might have to dust off the Ci4 4000 and find a nice rod for it so I don't kill the 2500. Hopefully next time I can pick up a size dhu!
My first crack at write up so hopefully I didn't do to bad!
Cheers zac

Nice work mate. The secret is those Cap Morgans. Keep them going and the fish will follow :-)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Western King Wrasse are a bloody good bait
Find them and there are usually some reasonable dhuies around - fresh fillet or butterfly any really small ones - magic bait.
I would however congratulate you on getting fish on plastics in metro - have tried and tried with no success yet absolutely cleaned up a little north using the same techniques so you are certainly doing something right

Nice work buddy! 2500 is fishable depends how deep you go and if you get a huge dhuey, you may not be able to stop it before it dives into a hole. so Ci4 4000 is definitely better for this application. Hope you have fun shopping for a new rod. :)
How heavy is your elavator jighead ?

good first report mate, I
good first report mate, I loved my sic stick before I snapped the tip off it, cant seem to find them in the stores over here.
Would have been good fun on the 2500 but I think you will find your luck will run out on bigger fish. The 4000 ci4 would be good fun but ideally a 5000 would be the go as they have a bigger crank and seems to make a big difference when using plastics and light jigs, especially on the hook-up when you want to clear fish from the reef.
best results I've had on plastics is using those Berkley elevator jig heads- give them a try if you see them in the stores.

Cheers guys!
I was using a 1oz jig head in 40m then the same in 14m. I did have 2oz and 1/2oz there aswell. Maybe I should have gone lighter in 14m?
I love the sic stick aswell! I actually got it from BCF for about $50 I think. They were having a sell out of old stock and was sitting in the half price rack, then gave me more off it because it had been sitting there so long because apprently no one wanted one pieces.
I do also have a 5000 biomaster sitting collecting dust aswell. Would that be a bit better? Also I was thinking running pe2 with it or the 4000?
Also what rod should I be looking for? Any help, tips or tricks is greatly appreciated!
Cheers zac

Try the Fishing Western australia rods.
Relativly well priced and a quality rod (6'8' combi jerk or their 7' softplastics rod). Will match up to the 4000 or 5000 perfectly. The 4000 teamed up with PE2 braid will be sufficient for most situations you will encounter. You should be able to use the combi jerk with both reels mate (it also allows you to fish jigs as well as soft placcis). Either give Fishing WA protackle in wangara a go or Oceanside tackle and marine in O'Connor. They will be able to help you out.

my brother just bought one of
my brother just bought one of those new diawa catalina rods for his 4000 stella. @$400 they're not cheap but probably best rod I've seen for the application you are considering.
for a 4000 size shimano reel I would go with 20lb and for the 5000 you may as well go 30lb. the biomaster will handle it no problems.
