Thought I was onto a school

Tue, 2011-03-08 12:50

Thought I was onto a school of herring on the weekend until I pulled up a double header of these little turd fish.  I reckon they would make good live bait for any bigger fish?

Pelican food...

Tue, 2011-03-08 13:18

All they are good for is pelican food at the jetty..

I caught a heap with the young fella in Warnboro sound, and we had a pelican next to the boat - he manged to eat 27 of them before trying to fly off - it was a laugh, cause he could not resist the treat, but could not eat anymore - LOL!

Tried them for bearly, but they are hard to mince - very tough when fresh, but not much juice in them - good fighters for their size - mate of mine recons it makes good pickled fish, as this eliminates the bone problem - not my favorite though..Tried live bait too - cast it about a metre from the front of a lurking shark - not interested!!!

I move if i catch even one of them - waste of time, bait and fuel...

Good as livebait for Mulloway

Tue, 2011-03-08 14:14

Used to always use them as livebaits for Mulloway off the Busselton Jetty in winter. And the Mulla's down there loved them. All the ones we have caught off the Busso jetty (if they havent spewed up mid fight) have always had trumpies in them. Plus they are alot more hardy as a livey anchored to the bottom than a Yellowtail or Herring.

Just an idea for the future

Tue, 2011-03-08 15:53

Perhaps find out what they are before taking eight of them, its a bit late to put them back as shit fish if they are dead.

Also a species guide on board might help avoid accidentally taking protected or size restricted fish.

Well - we were pretty sure what that they were grunters - was double-checking.

We had the identification chart from WA fisheries and I used my phone to have a look online before taking them.

At least I'm not taking much more endangered Snapper, etc

Good work in at least trying to identify beforehand, but still nasty business with fisheries if you had made a mistake.

Sat, 2011-03-19 18:32

Different sort of Trumpeter they get down in Tas. Thge only thing they have in common with these are the colouration. The ones they get are a deepwater species that get quite large. I have heard of them being cught in the 200's off esperance.
