Fantastic! This is a Tubemouth Siphonognathus argyrophanes. Despite its appearance, it is not related to pipefish or a flutemouth - it actually related to the Rainbow Cale and Herring Cale and various weed-whiting (which are not true whiting, but that's another story...) in the Odacidae. You must have been in seagrass. I've never seen one caught on a hook before.
Yes we were drifting for squid and the kids were playing around trying to catch anything that moved on the weed bed. the kids thought it was great seeing the colours and then being able to watch it swim away.
I should have put it up for a Fishwrecked record??
You could have kept it and put it up for a FW record. But, I for one are very happy to see that you released a rare fish to live and get on with it. You have the picture of a very rare capture and you haven't killed a very rare fish well done.

That's what I was tending to lean towards was a Flutemouth. It was a brilliant green colour.

dont have to keep a fish
to get a FW record ,as long as you have a photo on a brag mat or ruler you can still release after
