That explains the rumour of the whale in the river - thought it was a hoax but now i know.

Unsuccessful

Mon, 2008-05-12 09:46

I went out on Saturday at about 12 and fished till about 4pm.  I tried at the claremont jetty, aroudn Nedlands yacht club, Jojo's, matilda bay, near the narrows, just west of the bridge at the causeway and at the start of riverside Dr near the bridge. I peppered all those spots with hundreds of casts, walked up and down the shore around all those areas and managed nothing other than a few lost lures and a getting completely saturated.

To add to that I did a recon mission aroudn Point Peron after work on Friday and got no fish (at least I knwo what the area looks like now) and then fished North Mole yesterday for some good sized herring.

The bream are really bugging me.  I have been chasing them hard and still no luck!

with persistance you will get the rewards, ive only fished the river for bream a few times and only caught small ones, will start to put a few more hours in one day and try and get some big ones

Hi Gus

Give the old prawns a go. Cast an unweighted, prawn around the yacht clubs (or even better if you can do it - under the Barrack St ferry terminal).

Lower reaches try a whole

Tue, 2008-05-13 19:59

Lower reaches try a whole mussle as the blowies will take your prawn if your fishing structures.

Thanks for the info

Dean, this may seem like a stupid question but do you use a whole mussle including shell.  I am assuming you mean a fairly small one with a hook wedged between the lips?  Is that right? Embarassed

To keep the bait away from

To keep the bait away from the blowies, you leave the mussel in the shell. Bream like picking mussels off rocks and piers so they're lips are adapted to remove them from the shell.

Theres a great picture in 'how to catch a fish' which shows you how to rig them (with a bream stuck on the hook). I dont have it in front of me, but from memory, they used an offset hook like those worm/SP ones, though perhaps a long shanked hook (baitholder type might be good) would work too. The straight shank was along the hinge. I think the barb was away from the shell. I suspect when rigging, the shank passes through the mussel to stop the whole thing falling off. Then weight it with a small running ball sinker to the hook as you would other baits.
