Hamelin

Take extra care on the ramp at Hamelin, it can be very dangerous if there is any sort of swell running and if the swell comes up while you are out don't think twice about dropping the decky off to drive the car and trailer round to Flinders while you sail round, it can save broken bones and damaged cars and boats

a long list

 So where do we start

1. Is boat, motor, trailer all serviced and suitable for travel and offshore?

2. Do you have all the offshore safety gear and release weight. Take extra long 100m anchor rope.

3. How many people on board and experience

4. Good luck with Hamelin Bay ramp - it can be a bastard.  Will need assistance.

5. what charts do you have to navigate the reef systems

6. weather forecasts??.  Swell forecasts??

not my choice of location for a first time fishing trip but good luck and if it looks dodgy then there will be other days.

Check Seabreeze... south west

Fri, 2016-04-15 16:36

Friday looks ok. .. but Sat will be a complete Bastard for launching ands esp retrieval at Hamelin...  wind from the north/west will have the back of your boat fully exposed to breakers and sloppy conditions.  I would shift your launching location to the new marina at Augusta for Sat and Sunday and piece of mind.  From there you can fish Flinders and maybe sneak yr nose around the west of Cape Leeuwin but wind and seas are westerly and northerly.... def not for the faint hearted  or inexperienced.  Good KGW and other species out from Augusta.  Keep yr plan flexible but Augusta looks the go atm. If it shuts down then the Blackwood becomes an option for whiting and other estuarine species.

 As others have said, Hamelin

As others have said, Hamelin ramp is not for the faint hearted, anything over a 2m swell, forget it, it's not worth it. Even 2m is challenging. Any wind from the west or north west or north for that matter, forget it.

there is no protection at this ramp, trailer wash off the ramp when trying to retrieve very easily.

ive a lot of experience down there and even with my 26ft boat I don't risk it.  I've seen too many people get hurt and too many damaged boats down there

Fishing out of Augusta is simply amazing anyway, great protection that time of year in the bay and fishing out round the islands 4 mile or so out is great. Pinkys, dhus, sambos, yellow tail kings, and harlequin are a plenty! Shallower has herring, skippy, squid, KG's and more

Or if you want to pass away

Or if you want to pass away an arvo set up your deck chairs with a couple of beers in the car park with a view of the ramp. Watch how everyone else does it always good for a laugh and you learn what not to do.

Funniest home videos

Sat, 2016-04-16 10:56

If I had recorded some that I have seen there I would have won Funniest Home Videos comp many times.
Think the best was when a bloke pulled up along side my shark boat while I was doing maintenance on the mooring and asked what was the best way to retrieve his , what looked brand new 24-25 foot glass boat. With the swell up I told him Flinders Bay was the safest option and to get his decky to drive the car and trailer round there while he drove the boat round the cape. He more or less said to get F#$%^ed and he would give it a go.
Looked over at ramp and when you see a big glass boat sideways across a trailer and people in the water, you realise some people will come back for advice in a short time, and he did, asking for the safest way through the inside passage to the cape and passed Dead Finish to Flinders Bay.
