Fishwreckapedia - WA Dhufish

G'day guys,

The fourth species for the fishwreckapedia fish species identification list is the iconic Western Australian Dhufish. Please add anything you know about the species, in terms of habitat, depth, movements over times of the year, prefered catch methods - rigs/baits, legal size limit - bag limit, eating quality etc.

Please try and add things which haven't been posted before, when the discussion has covered most of the information I will place it into a new area on the site where we will build upon a database of fish species for identification and general use. I will also attach photos to help with the identification, if you have any really good ones without an angler in the photo, please submit them, or email them to me at:

Some photo's of dhufish, male and female to help with identification would be great to attach to this thread.

Cheers,
Adam

Dhufish are limited to 2 fish per angler with a minimum size limit of 50cm along the coast. They are generally found between 5 and 120 meters deep in my experience and suffer badly from barotrauma over depths of 35m if brought up quickly from the bottom.

I have found best baits to be fresh fish and a squid/mulie combination on a snelled rig on lumpy reef bottom. I rate them at 4 stars out of 5 when it comes to eating quality and 3 out of 5 for fighting characteristics.
