Fixing Miss Kimberly

Hi crew, I picked up my new rig on Wed and put it inside my workshop to get her ready for the big blue.

All looks ok in tis picture but the bimini was broken. ( I knew this at the purchase )

First thing to sort out was the bimini, that was broken right through the two front poles.

The aluminium tube was fractured and old, so i decided to take it of and make a new one. It was also a bit low for me and needed to be raised about 15cm.

The electric system was also removed to be organized and replaced.

I would realy like a new sounder + plotter and would appreciate some advice . ( budget up to 1500 combined )

I am installing some tackle storage box's and other modifacations overall before i hit the water. ( going to take a few weeks ) I hope to update the progress and get some advice as well .

Cheers  Grant

For tanks

Fri, 2011-07-29 23:14

Nah, I havn't taken it out yet. Every thing was ok except the bimin and the auto oil tank was damaged. I must say i'm a bit fussy and want everything as good as i can get it for the water.

The black poles are dive tank rack's. Holds 8 tanks up in the front and was set up for diving. I was going to cut them out but found them not realy in the way. You can hook you foot under them and the life jackets stack in them very neatly.

Meant the ones on the T top (as opposed to a sideways F top :p)

Interesting tank storage now I look though.

Sorry

Sorry i mis read your comment. Yeah i don't like them as well, but with the weight of the T top i think it needs something.

I was thinking of having one central pole instead, this way the seat box could be used from both sides and the bimin will still have support.

Sat, 2011-07-30 08:34

go the hds 8 combo mate,

might be a fraction more $, they are a great gps and i think they are a great all round sounder as well, guys rave on about the 585, i have seen both and used both and i like the hds better(imo) also it s not a combo.

i have a 10 and a 8 now and its great to have the biggger screens. i wouldnt look at the 7 at all.

if you could strecht it a bit more go the 10.

are you going to go with a new vhf? i might now of one cheap(new) no areil or cable

Certainly the HDS8 seems to

Certainly the HDS8 seems to be the pick of chartplotters under $2k.

Its worth shelling out a few extra $$$ to get the HDS8 as you get the softbuttons, rather than having to use the more than slightly annoying menu.

As a chartplotter only these looked pretty interesting, and at an ok price; Standard Horizon CP590. I believe there is another kit with a tranny, as well as plug in radar.

you dont need both and the 27

Sat, 2011-07-30 12:22

you dont need both and the 27 is all you need by law, but they are slowly dying out and if you are replacing i would go the vhf.

i have both in my tub and i hate having to use the 27 when other boats im with dont have vhf, the quality is way better on the vhf.

good project.Keep/install

Sat, 2011-07-30 12:47

good project.

Keep/install both radio's if you have them already.

Lotsa people in metro only have 27 and you cannot communicate with them on VHF.

VHF is needed when fishing in non metro area's and when going further out in metro.

Lowrange stand alone HDS5 GPS unit uses the very same processing modules etc and same features as the bigger Lowrange units and as a stand alone unit is plenty big enough to see clearly where you are going.

All for $800 incl Gold chart.

Having Fishfinder and GPS in separate units is in my view the way to go.

nice looking rig!  Have you thought about going two HDS 5? that way you get the best of both worlds in a seperate sounder/GPS but the also talk to each other no problem. Wire them so they are on separate fuses, then if one goes down you still have a back up.  Also check out Ray marine. Little bit more but really good to use.

HDS* as a combo now, then buy

Sun, 2011-07-31 08:11

HDS* as a combo now, then buy a Furuno FCV-620 later as a dedicated GPS/chartplotter.

It seems that the Lowrance HDS units are a pretty good as a gps/chartplotter and I admit I prefer them to some alternatives, but I'd hate to invest in redundant units when they're pretty ordinary as a sounder.

I'm partial to Raymarine, I used to have an A65 on my tinny and it was a good unit. It did fail once and Challenge Marine got us a replacement unit pretty quickly.

Hard to make a decision

Sun, 2011-07-31 16:44

Thanks for all the feed back guy's, The more i look at them i keep concluding i need more money lol .

The HDS 10 looked impressive , if i go a combo unit. I was set on two seperate units but this might be the one. I will still be looking at others as i have a bit of time untill i need it.

Did some work today and installed some tackle hatches in the box in front of the console. The cushion seat on it made it hard to open and get into. I made two aloy box's and bought two hatches then cut them in to place. The box was perfect for a 70lt esky and i am going to put some rails on the box lid to keep it in place when on the water.

All the bits ready to cut in .

Enough room for tackle tray's ond other items, all easy to get to without having to move the esky.

Cheers Grant..
