STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer
Submitted by coraltrout on Mon, 2011-08-01 09:03
I have to store my boat for about 3 - 4 months and was considering adding some STAB-BIL fuel stabilizer that's been advertised on TV. My boat has a 70 litre under floor tank and as it is nearly full of fuel, I don't want to drain the tank if I can avoid it.
Has anyone used this product and know if it is any good?
Your ideas/advice/thoughts would be appreciated.

When burning the fuel after
When burning the fuel after using it I have found that it affects your economy. I used it to store my cruiser for a while and when I came back I burnt the 130L in about 600km compared to the normal 900Km.
Personally when I leave my boat for longer periods I ensure the bleed valve is as high as possible (drop the nose of the boat on the floor as bleed is at the back of the boat). I then fill it to the absolute max. When I come back I drain out a 5L jerry before lifting the boat. The idea behind this is stopping the condensation you get from having air in your fuel tank.
I know they say fuel can go off, but from what little experience I have had with it diesel is a problem with this but much fuel less so. Personally I dont think you have as many issues with fuel going stale as you do from the STAB-BIL loss in enconomy.
Im not sure draining would be a great idea as I would have thought you would end up with more condensation then....dont really know...could all be an old wives tail I was fed as a Kid :)

Yes, this is what I do as
Yes, this is what I do as well and the top up method.
Even gets rid of condensation in carby bowls and fuel lines, proven method beyond doubt!

I have regularly left fuel
I have regularly left fuel (unleaded 91) in portable tanks for long periods. Never had a problem yet so can't see a need to buy it myself. If fuel has been sitting for months I do top the tank up just a little if possible.
