Flush muffs didn't work?

Got home from a fish the other day, put the muffs on and  turned the motor on while I started cleaning up the rest of the boat. After a few minutes the over heat alarm goes off, I look for the telltale and there's none so I shut down hastily to ponder what went wrong. I've never had that happen before and I couldn't find anything wrong with the hose or muffs or anything blocking the water intake. After shitting myself for a bit, as a test I fitted one of those collapsable flushing bags and filled it up to above where I think the impellor level is, fired it up and the telltale started again and no more overheating??

I've run it like that for 15 minutes or so and it didn't overheat BUT in my mind I reckon the telltale water isn't as hot as it usually is. So I'm looking for any opinions on a cause.I ordered a couple of new thermostats as a precaution I'm really hoping its going to be OK as I will only have a day or so to sort it out before we drag it up to Coral Bay in a couple of weeks.

Muffs

Exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

Put your muffs in a vice  and squash the metal rod back together so it clamps tighter around your engine.  Your muffs are probably loose so this will more than likely fix the problem.

Muffs are as cheap as, around $15.00

After getting a new pair, I am in total awe of how crap my old ones are ;)

There are the new double muffs that force water in both sides. If you don't have enough water pressure they don't work.

Hope its just the muffs, that would be the best case scenario. Also hope I didn't damage the impellor by running it dry for 3/4 minutes.

96 evinrude 115. Supposed to have a new impellor in it,  I guess ill take it for a spin 2 days before we leave to see if it heats up or the telltale looks weaker. If it fails then I guess Coral Bay becomes land based, over school holidays, nooooo......

Landbased when you have a boat in the drive way would be a fate worse than death.

Rather than take it for the spin 2 days before you leave, you could always just chuck a new impeller in it yourself to be sure.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Doing *first time* work like that myself so close to deadline is doomed to fail. Everything would have to go without a hitch, and we all know that never happens.

It doesnt take long at all to stuff an impellor with no water running through it, better to be safe and pull it out and check

II guess that'd why you NEVER leave your motor unattanded when flushing. I have had the muff fail before, they use to seal great on my merc but as soon as they went on the tohatsu they did nothing even when trying to squeeze them back into shape, the cup was gone. Now i always just stand there and watch, at least at the start. Hope your motor is all well and good !!

same thing happened to me last time i had a service. Took her back to the mechanic and he found a blockage in the telltale, cleared it with some type of solvent or detergent
