FNQ trip report

Just to add to that video posted, here are some pics of the trips we did the other day. The first day inshore was amazing with Cobia, Mackerel and Large Mouth Nannygai to 50 cm released as we had so many fish. It was non stop action and brilliant fun. The next day saw us go wide and we had a great day on the Stickbaits and poppers with not only the GT but Spanish Macks were flying out of the water trying to smash the stickbaits. We could have bagged out on Spanish if we wanted to. Some Good Reds and other fish were landed to round off a great trip. The final trip was also a good one although the time spent wide trying to chase a Billfish/Wahoo etc was fruitless. We still got some good fish though including some Stonker Blue Spot trout and a big Wrasse at the end. The Dolphins were a good way to end the day. I'll get some more footage sorted and post down the track.

Awesome trip by the sounds. How far North are you there? Monster trout for sure!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

 Just north of Port Douglas

Wed, 2015-01-07 19:31

Just north of Port Douglas in FNQ mate. Some good GT surface action in our area if you were ever in this neck of the woods. We don't go much so difficult to comment to much on the size but have found most are in the 10 to 20 kilo range. I reckon if we put more effort in we would find the bigger ones as there are plenty around in the smaller models.

Hmm... Funny you mention

Wed, 2015-01-07 20:50

Hmm... Funny you mention that. But I'm likely to be coming through Cairns for 1 or 2 trips through the course of this year and likely tack on a couple days R&R in Cairns. Still spots on one trip to PNG if you are keen on some big doggie action ;-)

Otherwise might drop you a line nearer the time for some pointers etc!

That's a dream trip for sure and the type of thing a few of my mates want to do as well. I can't afford it right now though which sucks. You'll have a ball!!

Awesome

Are the Hump Head maori wrasse protected there too. And the limits must be better for reds over there than here.

Yes the wrasse are no take.

Thu, 2015-01-08 19:10

Yes the wrasse are no take. After lifting it in to de-hook we took a few quick snaps and let her go.

It seems like we have more generous limits for most fish over our way. 5 Red Emperor each, 7 trout, 9 combined of small and large mouth Nannygai, 5 spangled Emperor and so on. There is a combined limit of 20 coral reef fin fish per person as well that overrides the above numbers.
