Fuel starvation issue?
Submitted by Dud on Tue, 2013-02-05 15:08
Hi all,
I have a centre console with 2 fuel tanks. The front tank is located in the middle of the boat with a fuel line length of approx 6 metres from the tank to the motor (140 Merc).
The issue is that at anything above about 5-8 knots it will run for a while and then die like it isn't getting any fuel. If i stay under that it will run OK with no cutting out. I don't have the problem with the rear tank. Its not a breather issue either I believe.
Any suggestions on what it could be or tips to try and isolate the problem.
cheers

I had the same problem with my boat with a 300 yammie ,the tank had a build up of junk which reduced the flow of fuel to the motor , pain in the arse as it was a new boat so the tank had to come out and be cleaned.

Agreed
Overkill is right. Had the same problem with a built in tank on my old Pacemaker...once past 5 knots, it would seem as though the engine was starving of fuel. the piick up was getting blocked by scum as the tank was angled up by the boat getting up on the plane. Best bet is to blow out the tank or remove the tank and purge all its contents.

Merc hose?
Are you using mercury brand hose? Have had a few reports of late where the teflon / silicon lining comes adrift and clogs up the filter.
Make sure you don''t use common silicon to reseal the inspection plate on you tank, it reacts with petrol and forms small balls that find their way to the pick up. They block off the pick up and once the engine stops and then because of a lack of suction then drop back in the tank , rolling round waiting to get sucked up again. Happened to me once and took ages to find the problem. Sikaflex is the stuff to use.
