is it normal/best practice to 'get a run up' like that when snatching? Don't have much (any) experience myself but thought u would get tension first. then pull?

yep a bit of a run up helps

Sun, 2013-11-03 17:17

yep a bit of a run up helps launch the bogged vehicle out.  The snatch straps are slightly stretchy and you can"sling shot" the bogged car out.

up hills is fine

its the fact he was not in line and the left side was higher.
its not uncommon that if someone lends you a snatch you are buying it as they only have a limited lifespan.

Dammm

Sun, 2013-11-03 17:54

Damm , that's not good, Just goes to show you it all can go wrong very quick. It would be easy to sit back on the keyboard and explain all the things that went wrong and how they should have done it, but when your in a situation like that ( tide coming in and sinking fast ) it's easy to panic and make mistakes.

Just glad it wasn't me, i struggle to keep calm even if i get slightly bogged on a local beach . lol .

Seriously but they where

Sun, 2013-11-03 19:28

Seriously but they where never going to get across that loaded up like they are ...especially when the tide was turning.

Snatching out of mud like that is always hard. Should have anchored the car and winched out.. all in hindsight i spose!

Not having a go, but just out of curiosity, on a flat mud plane like that, what would you anchor the other car with?

In the absence of a ground

Sun, 2013-11-03 21:25

In the absence of a ground anchor, you can always try burying the spare tyre with the winch hook attached to it.
This though is very laborious and time consuming, and from their situation probably didn't have enough time to be digging in the spare.
Just an around bad situation, in a bad location.
probably a million and one ways they could have, should have done it.
But from personal experience when the tide is coming in on your bogged 4wd, it takes a hell of a lot of self control to not go into panic mode. Which most people do, including me. Fortunately I managed to get my 4wd out, albeit on my own as I was fishing on my own :-)

 Its hard up top. Stumps/dig

Sun, 2013-11-03 21:31

Its hard up top. Stumps/dig haha. Never said it was a easy option. Made is hard that the brakes where shot otherwise a little extra anchoring plus the weight of the car not too bad.

But as said above panic sets in.

A few years ago we crossed a mud bit a bit longer than that. We had 8 cars with dome winches but still layed trees through the bog for hrs because we knew the outcome of a bog there
