getting power out of a 100 series???

I'm wondering how much I have to spend to get some decent power out of my 100 series diesel cruiser (non turbo)

I've had a troopy and now this gxl.   Both have been completely standard and pretty  gutless

What can I do, for how much $ , and what can I expect.

Cheers

injectors

Sat, 2012-08-04 06:38

I have a Patrol 4.2 diesel no turbo so it probably has the same general charactorisitics

depending on your k's it probably requires an injector service as they will be clogged up.  For my 4.2D patrol I had a mobile guy come out and do this for $500.

A K&N air filter will make a slight difference and save you money in the long run on air filters

I also fitted extractors and sport exhaust after my exhaust had a couple of holes in it for about $1100 this made a decent improvement and it sounds like its going fast now lol

Your injector pump once again depending on the k's could maybe do with an overhaul but this can be quite$$$

The next step is a turbo but facts are facts non turbo straight 6 diesels are never going to be a speed machine but will go all day and all night without skipping a beat.  If its an older motor I would be a bit cautious about bolting a turbo on it.

maybe the new V8 troopy could be on the cards? If only they didnt have leaf springs in the back end!!

Assumming every thing else is

Sat, 2012-08-04 09:14

Assumming every thing else is in reasonable condition any motor will benefit from air flow both in and out.  High flow air filters to let more air in and are pretty cheap (in the sceme of things), if its a Cold Air Intake all the better. Easy to do some mods yourself which will get the cooler air in from outside, get a high flow filter and makesomething up so the air going into the filter box comes from outside the car or air flowing in from around headlights or from in front of the radiator etc. and not sucking hot air from the engine bay (not sure if you have a snorkle fitted but for a fourby this would be the go - particularly if you might go through water as the standard CAI built for normal cars might suck in water and cause damage crossing creeks etc).  Airflow out = extractors, high flow cats and a better flowing exhaust that the standard ones - see an exhaust shop..

Other than rebuilding the engine I don't know there is alot else you can do other than the turbo route,  do the sums first though as it may be cheaper to buy another car already turbo'ed.

works burger?

A mate has a 100 series , United fuel inj aftermarket turbo, and lpg fumagation,

and its still no speed machine.

In saying that it tows a 6.5 m heavy boat no probs, and still goes very well compared to a stocker.

Same question must always be asked , whats your budget?

The whole box and dice could cost heaps turbo $3-5000,  lpg $3000 hd clutch $1500 fitted etc etc

or if moneys a issue as others have said filter , snorkel , new injs and a exhuast for a mild increase.

I went from a 308 ci fj45 to a td42 gq patrol and have just learned to relax and enjoy the trip

( you dont have a choice ha!)

good luck.

You have to be careful

Sat, 2012-08-04 10:21

You have to be careful bolting a turbo on to the 1HZ motor it will go a heap quicker  but your longevity will be gone also. A turbo adds a heap more heat to this block and its internal componenets which arent really designed for it. More fuel ,more bang ,more heat. If you do not thrash it it should be fine but i would say in heavy sand or dunes and a big right foot and i would say you will snap something pretty quick.

I have this model and did a heap of research on it but ended up just having the reliability to run all day and night towing or not and not getting speeeding tickets. One day ill get a turbo model, one powerball

Grayzee i have the same LC

Sat, 2012-08-04 10:33

Grayzee i have the same LC and have been researching this for a while. For the 100 series as stated above chips are a no go, bigger exhaust filters etc will improve a bit. The only way to get more go and realistically you would get around 25 to 30% more power and torque is to turbo. You can buy the kits yourself but its better to get them fitted by a pro, warranties and all that. From what i have researched most turbos are pretty much the same and as long as you dont wind them up to max you should be right. I have narrowed it down to a Safari Turbo system fitted with 2.5 exhaust $3850 fitted or a DTS Turbo system fitted with 3 inch exhaust for $4500.The Safari systems have i think been developed mainly for the Toyotas but the DTS systems seem to be the ones most insstalled by the more hard core 4x4 crew, they give out a little more power. In saying that i have been warned that if you power up to much you risk diff and clutch damage but you can mess about and upgrade them as well. All depends how you drive them, you are never going to win the quarter mile but overtaking will be safer and you wont have to crawl up long hills with the boat or caravan on the back like a slug. Oh have also been told that an intercooler would give you another 8 to 10% but for another $1500 to $2000 dont think its worth it unless you live in a hot climate where your engine might overheat also if you go this way would recomend you intall a turbo timer and exhaust temp gauge and drive by them.

Cheers

Willo

Id Be looking around for a 1-hd

Sat, 2012-08-04 10:48

Id be looking around for a second hand 1-hd motor.

i recently helped fit one up to the same non turbo 100 series you have, power went from buggerall to around 150kw.

the engine code is 1-HD -FTE, All non turbo Diesels are slugs, and just fitting a Turbo kit is not good for that motor you have now

+1 for the 1HD-FTE Toyota

Sat, 2012-08-04 11:56

+1 for the 1HD-FTE Toyota 4.2TD conversion :)

Equal best ever 4wd motor with the Nissan TD42TI 4.2TD. Both those Turbo'd 6 cylinders were awesome.

Though from what i gather you have to find a 1HD-FTE motor out of a 70 series not a 100 series, as the oil sump onnthe bottom of the engine is set a bit further back allowing it to fit with the live axle on the front of your 100 series. The 1HD-FTE out of the 100 series didnt have to worry about that as it was only ever fitted to the IFS models. Well thats what i have found from reading a 4wd action article about someone doing a conversion.

In the latest 4wd action mag(issue185) there is a whole segment about doing engine conversions. Reckons for a 1HD-FTE  factor $25000 for a drive in drive out conversion using a second hand engine. So quiet $$$, but if the body of you current Cruiser is pristine could work out cheaper than buying a new one. Point to note though it will probably add very little to resale value as with any aftermarket things you do/add to cars.

engine swap link

Sat, 2012-08-04 11:16

Good idea about the fte engine ,but (1) as long as you could find one (2) getting one

at a reasonble price and condition.

Heres a interesting link for swapping one out with a 1hz

thats why i went the v8 100

Sat, 2012-08-04 19:22

thats why i went the v8 100 series mate, 100k's all the way home, no probs at all.

but the fuel bill aint to good.

im in my truck all day from the word go, so my v8 sits there all week not moving, not doing any klm's, so i traded it off for the extra fuel.

still not nice when you go away and with a couple of bigger trips coming up it will play into it quite abit, but you cant have everything.

wana do jurien again a few weeks???

Mines on a ute so lenght ways

Sat, 2012-08-04 15:42

Mines on a ute so lenght ways from rear tyres to taillights one on each side and it a patrol also but as far as i'm aware they can go inside the wagon bit the tank is small so it takes up bugger all room and they also make a wheel shaped tank now that can go where your spare lives which is fine if you have a rear wheel hanger/bar setup

Tyres

Mon, 2012-08-06 09:27

Hi Grayzee

Sounds bumb but dropping from 285/75/16 tyres back to 265/75/16 (or 275/70/16)will give you a whole lot more power. I forget the actual figures but in my old patrol (on the dyno) I lost about 20% of my power and torque when I increased the size of the tyres.

May not look as sexy but it will give you an instant bang for your buck.

After that, unless you are really in love with the Cruiser, sell it and spend the money on something that already has the power you need.

Spending $5000 on a turbo and 3 inch exhaust will give you great power, but depending on the k's on the motor you may not be able to turn up the boost as much as you want to get the best power.

Cheers

Brad
