Giant Herring info

Is this the right time of year for giant herring? I was out in Cockburn Sound today on the ski where i spotted this school of about 15 fish hanging off the edge of a drop off that went from about 50cms of water down to 2m. They were light brown on top and shiny silver belly and very slender, some of the fish were around 60cms. I cast at this school of fish for over an hour and a half, had one hit on a 10g twisty and 3 hits on a 3in SP. Extreme tentative bites, just nicking the tail of the SP. They would chase everything i threw at them but rarely hit. Was probably the most frustrating fishing i have ever done. They didnt seem fussed by the ski at all, often swimming towards the me about 20cms from the surface then drifting down a couple meters away.

I couldnt work out what fish they were for a long time, then the fishing started reminded me of some fishing shows i had seen, where they were targetting bonefish on fly, and how frustrating the fishing was, then it clicked that you could chase GH on fly in the swan. Im 90% sure these were GH.

Is my only real chance of getting these fish on fly gear? Can anyone reccomend some lures for spinning gear?

Sure they werent snook? Snook have that long slender body and are light brown and are a lot more common in those kinds of areas.

I agree, there are plently of pike in the sound. There normaly quite aggresive towards lures but could be many reasons why they wernt biting.

have a look here i think there on the second page. http://fishwrecked.com/content/fishwreckapedia?page=1

as i said earlier, 99% sure

Fri, 2011-03-18 23:31

as i said earlier, 99% sure theyre GH. Ive caught plenty of snook, pike even longtom in the sound, this school of fish was different, Just hanging off the sandbar, llike they do in the swan. Swimming around like a school of salmon, even chasing lures like salmon do, but theyre definately not salmon either. Nobody has to believe me as im not 100% sure, Im just after some advice on the best way of catching one on spinning gear.

ie warm water its common to have GH in the Sound especially around the shallows/sand edges.

The fact that the fish nipped normally means GH and yes they love flys, the "Elops flys" are the go and 20lb flurocarbon tippet.

Hopefully this extra hot water brings another population down! The few I've hooked and seen hooked have all been on plastics.

yep i think im going to have to try a different colour to excite them a bit more. A mate also saw them in the same area earlier in the week, smashing bait right in the shallows, looks like they might be sticking around a bit

Caught a 30cm herring at port

Tue, 2011-03-22 08:41

Caught a 30cm herring at port kennedy about 2 weeks ago and we caught one about the same in the sound on the weekend. Thought it was a juvy salmon at first but was definitely a herring. Was just using squid.

Sunday morning was ridiculous for herring. Trolling little bits of lumo tube on 2 rods bagged us 30 herring and 3 legal tailor in an hour of fishing.
