Glass Cats
Submitted by Paully on Fri, 2009-10-30 17:14
without wanting to ask the obvious, are there any members who have had experience with F/Glass Cats, good points/bad points. Im aware of the upside issues, stability, ride - i have heard they struggle in a following sea - to what extent Im unsure, that info does not come from an experienced boater by any means. I have never been on one offshore, so looking for any advice tips. I will be riding on one in the near future, and thinking of buying one at some stage. Im have been offered a share of a Glacier Bay Cat -27ft, 2.9 beam from memory.
Cheers

big glass cats are a dream
big glass cats are a dream on the water and yes following sea can have issues, but if you know how to "walk your cat" across the waves and swell, then it's no drama.
If I had the cash, I'd have a nice 28foot glass cat with twin 300hp Suzuki's on the back....
just one power ball!!!
older ones could stop dead in a "air-brake" when air trapped in the tunnel suddenly slows you down... can be quiet unnerving at first, but newer design have eliminated that issue.
Very good articles in F&B magazine on glass and allie cats over the years, check the last three months issues for feedback or the Seamedia website.

i drive a friends glass cat
i drive a friends glass cat (6.2m noosacat) at least once a month and i honestly dont like it as much as my 7.5 single hull westerberg ali .. maybe im biased :) ... yes its faster than mine in a large swell but its also unstable with the swells down here coming side on .. its also very thirsty (might have a lot to do with twin 175 merc 2strokes vers my 350 chev) in the right conditions im sure they are an awsome machine but imo they are not all they are cracked up to be ... dollar for dollar id rather buy a mono hull and use the extra coin for a longer boat.

Cats
Cats are mint, They have a smoother ride and a more consistent speed in most conditions. I have a 7m Leisure cat which I sit on 5000 rpms which is 23- 28 knots all the time in conditions around 15knot winds. It has twin 140 suzuki's. Fuel economy is good, around trip is about 80 nautical miles and use a combined fuel usage of 130 litres. The Leisure cat likes a following sea, but at a slower speed. Head on its very uncomfortable. Cats as you know love to be driven at a slight angle to the waves and walked, which is were you will get a fast comfortable ride. The only thing I dislike about cats is when you are drifting side on to a wave it rolls over the waves with a more jerky motion than a mono hull. So to overcome this use a sea anchor from the stern cleat and fish over the back quarter. The boat will drift on an angle and it will be safe in any condition.

Cats
If cats are so good how come most of the eastern states sea rescue groups getting rid of them and going for Naiads. They are prone to tipping over when running side on to a big sea.
We are in the process of getting a replacement rescue boat here in Carnarvon and have not even considered a cat, getting down to two finalists, the Air rider and the Naiad with the latter having more on the comittee in favour of.

Just like Holdens and Fords
One of the biggest rescue bases here in Perth have several of them. I agree there not every mans boat you must operate them so to speak not just get in them and drive.

70% of beach launch and game
70% of beach launch and game trailer boats in south africa are now cats.
each to his own, but as said, you don't just get in a cat and drive it....you learn to operate it at it's potential...
by the way, ever tried to cut a good sized side entry rescue door in Airride or Niade??? Yes collared-ribs with allie hulls are tremendous vessels, but they too have limitations, like any other boat.

Side doors
Have a look at Exmouth and Naturaliste's air rider for the side doors plus a transom door as well.
It is easy to pull someone from the water on a Naiad, you kneel down with knees under the gunwhale and hook arms under person armpits. No need to lay diwn on deck and don't need to use one hand to hang on,no sharp edges to drag him over just rubber skirt.
Google Lion Red 14.6 Naiad and see if you shark cats can do what it went hrough on its delivery trip

Carnarvonite, also Leeman
Sea Rescue are looking at what you guys in Carnarvon are also looking at. Cockburn Sea Rescue has just put in the water their new cat (30' with twin deisels inboards don't know name of motors think they are yamaha's & it looks like a Leisure cat but not) with several rescues under the belt so far, I love the look of the cat but haven't been on one to comment on, love the look of them.

Motor problems
Due to the motors being lower,I have been told that the side that peop[le fish on a drift tends to lean so the motor that side gets more wave slops and this can result in shorter life also I know for a fact that on the older designs, the motors used to suck in a lot of water vapors,so to fix this the motors need to be almost totally sealed and an air line (breather type) run up the underside of the gunnels to a area in the bow to feed them clean ,dry air,Also one split in half a few years ago at the Exmouth Game EX,I do not know the make but their are articles about it is some older magazines. jersey
