Glow stick trouble
Submitted by pinnroof on Tue, 2014-05-13 23:59
Hey Guys
Had this problem for a while an haven't found a decent solution. Problem Being my line when night fishing keeps wrapping around my glow stick on my rod tip after cast or when its a little windy. I have an extra large tip and requires a light with a diameter of approx 4.5mm. The only lights I can find tht suit are these cheep ones in the pic below tht hook up on the line.
Any one out know of a better type tht are large enough to clip on my rod, or hve any different ideas of how to light the rod tip at night?????

I only use
I only use this brand.
The whole glow stick is, U shaped and the line does not catch on it. The one pictured is XL but i normaly get the XXL and it fits tight on my larger beach rods. I get them at BCF ( i know i shouldnt shop there but they seem to be the only place i can find them ) Sometimes they are hard to get so i normaly buy a heap if i find them.
The only other way is to carry some sticky tape ( clear ) and tape over the glow stick so there are no edjes for your line to catch on .
PS: it says they glow for 4 hours, but most glow for 8 hours or so. if you put them on ice or in the freazer they can be reused .

lower makes no diff. only tht
lower makes no diff. only tht the rod gets thicker and they no longer fit. I also use the satelite brand for my smaller rod. Don't seem to have a light that will fit a 4.5mm tip tho, otherwise id use them for sure.

Snap the tabs off
Snap those tabs off and just tape them on to the tip of your rod, won't have a problem then

Attach a small piece of
Attach a small piece of tubing to the rod that will allow the small glowlights to simply push inside and pull out again when finished. Nothing to wrap around so no problem

I stick mine on a cloths peg
I stick mine on a cloths peg and clip it to the line just above the reel. when a fish takes it the peg falls off at the first eye.

Clip on a bell and if you hear a tinkle point your torch at it. Way more environmentally friendly.

How many years have I been fishing
All hours night and day. And I have never done this. Attach glow sticks to the line above lure or bait yes, but never on the rod. Use the drag ratchet as the indicator, or just natural light like moon and stars to see the rod.
Am I missing something that makes this way better, ie set drag higher etc?

wind
guys west oz LB fishing is all about battling the wind. The bell is useless with anything over 10 knots and good luck hearing the drag scream on a spin reel in windy conditions with a moderate swell plus many of the fish you encounter ie tailor wont pull alot of drag on a 13ft beach rod just bounce the tip which makes a glow stick perfect so you can see while huddled out of the wind or rain.
One thing that I have done to all my rods is fit a ring of reflective tape around the rod just below each guide so from a distance you can use your headlamp to see if your rod has a bend in it
for enviromental friendliness there are ones that last a lot longer but do use a small battery with a red led available on ebay

Clip on Lightsticks
We use (and stock) the Neptune Clip on Lightsticks and the XL covers nearly all rods. They're bright and last for up to 12 hours.
We dont have issues with line tangling, XL is 3.3-3.7mm (2 pce per pack)

Trymyluck: Can you please
Trymyluck: Can you please elaborate on the tubing and how its attached? sounds promising :) As for the bell. I fish the south western beaches of WA with big swell and current. Rod is constantly bouncing. Its the runs an big tugs I need to see. I might try the simple sticky tape over a light stick if needed. At least it wont snap or damage the line if something hooks up.
Oceanside tackle. I said 4.5mm not 3.2mm. Its a heaver an the tip is solid!

Not sure what brand, but you
Not sure what brand, but you can get them with a thin piece of clear tube that the glowstick fits into.I have found that if you push the glowstik halfway into the tube, the tube wil squeeze betweeen the supports on the end eye of the rod.I havent had to many dramas using this method. I like the idea of the reflective tape Rig

Glow in the dark paint
Available at bunnings used for highlighting emergency exits etc. spray the blank between first and second guide. Needs to have some sun before dark and will glow all night. Needs redoing every 6 or so months. As for bells use them myself and I regularly fish heavy swells etc. if your rods bouncing and moving so is your bait and sinker. This case I'm holding the rod so no need for bells

jelly rubber
Cut jelly rubber into rings slip 2 over eye of rod before feeding line through then you can put any size light on. They last a long time when you stretch them and you start seeing craks in the rubber just replace them.Clarke rubber sells any length you want 2 or 3 hundred mm last life time if you dont loose it.
