Submitted by Paul G on Sat, 2010-10-09 13:11
Weleft Two Rocks at 7;00 and were home eat egg and bacon burgers for 9:15.Jesse the winner again with a nice 12kg dhuie on pink ten inch plastic.Boy did this fish go hard we thought it was a ray as it took around four minutes to turn him .I finally got a line in and got smashed a good dhuie around the same size im guessing but on my 2-4 kg rod got busted off on the coral. Also released one around 500mm good quick trip.

Great stuff, i used to keep
Great stuff, i used to keep american fish in tanks and breed them, i am confident the reason why they smash the plastics is cause of instinct and territorial reasons, i found that out when the fish was full they wouldnt eat anymore but just be lethargic in their actions, as soon as i chuck in a live fish that was running for its life the fish smashed it regardless of it being full.

Yep american cichlids act
Yep american cichlids act very similar sometimes they may not like to eat dead dry food at all and feed on something live and moving for a week, sometimes you have to forcefully starve them for 2-3 days before they go back to the original diet(its not cruel fish can survive for ages without food in the wild), i found that also when there is a few of them they are more likely to get into competition and more likely to get into a big frenzy.

I guess it would be hard to
I guess it would be hard to drift with them as they would not stay on the bottom.I work patches and flair ups lumps and coral I hardly ever drift and the moter is working in and out of gear all day.just means the skipper dosen't get to do much fishing . We are fishing patches and lumps where we have got fish from before ,holding the boat over the ground or anchoring .This was a dive spot,One I hope to dive tommorrow if the weather hold of for a few hour in the morning seemed to be a few down there but as soon as I dropped the one I had on they went quiet.

If you drifting you need to
If you drifting you need to cast out infront of the drift so by the time the plastic hits the bottom its under the boat this gives you a couple off pulls before you pull up and start again .you can;t drop down like when you fishing as it doesn't sink quick enough.and ends up miles out behind the boat.I have driven back over the spot with the plastics still down and got fish bit like trolling

spot on paul
thats what i was doing, it was a very slow drift on friday anyway so i was getting to the bottom no probs.
im not gunna give up yet, just need to get my tecneek sorted out, the bait will still be on board for a while yet.
but nows the time for trying some differant things with the ban, cant wait for that first hook up on the sp, like you and jessie on a cheapy rod i normally use in the river, i dont think the fish know if you have the bling gear or not!

in the top pic.... are they roll out side curtains/storm covers?
or is that to enclose your cockpit?
looking at ways to enjoy our stays over at rotto a bit more when the wind is not being too freindly.
looks like a good way, roll out when needed.
cheers

The storm covers were made
The storm covers were made to roll up so when the boat is cleaned up I just close her up .no taking them of and on .The centre sheet could drop stright down and close of just the cab if needed.

got to agree with Jody on
got to agree with Jody on this one, ban Jessee and make him hold the boat on the spot and let you fish for a while, then again you probably would starve . Another great fish falling to Jessee's plastic, that kid has got the knack. well done

Good Stuff,
Not cheap the old pink dildos but effective, one of the boys scored a nice harly on one today.Seems there was no excuses for us not getting more fish today by some of the dhu's boated. We found the bite pretty slow today with only one dhu of around 68cm boated on jig and a couple by the skipper fishing bait.Oh well....

More "artificial" dhuies!
Well done Jesse...I really think the fish approach a plastic/jig differently to bait. Bait gets bitten for one reason: hunger. Lures cop it for the same reason and also anger/competition with other fish/territorial reasons.
Properly fished, l reckon lures will outfish bait almost all the time and I also discovered that if a hooked fish becomes unhooked, there's a good chance it will come back and hit the lure again, probably because it thinks it's eating a live prey item which happens to have gotten free, only to be eaten again. A dead hunk of bait would be less likely to cop another go.
Add up all the other disadvantages of bait: Stinks, takes up freezer space, if you buy it you're supporting an industry which could be also killing your target species as a bycatch(netting), requires the use of complex rigs/knots/multiple hooks, creates more of a mess in your boat then any fish that might be caught (except tuna, that's like rupturing a main artery!), and the rod/reel used is generally heavier and less comfortable to fish with than jigging/plastics gear.
Great work with the plastics, Paul...have you thought of having a go with the metal jigs/octa jigs? I think you'll find that they hold bottom a little better than the sp's.

nice jew would love to see
nice jew
would love to see some pics of the sounder over this spot to give us a idea what to look for ive been flogging it latley and have no fish to show for the last 5 trips its frustrating but lucky i love it either way with fish or with out
i think the sp only work when you have nice ground to fish? if your like me and have no consistant fish producing spots a bait has to be in the water
