Got a new rod where to fish?
Submitted by garethgkr on Thu, 2009-12-17 10:32
Hello
I've never fished at the beach before so I recently bought a 12" surf rod and I'm wondering where can I use it? I'm trying to find locations in Perth and I've heard reports at Scarborough and Cottosloe. But those beaches are massive where exactly do I fish?
And could you guys share an example of how do I tie the bait/sinker rig?
Cheers.

Hi Gareth
I am guessing you are north of the river. Why don't you try Floreat drain to start with. Just fish to the right of the where the drain enters into the water. Best times to fish are around sunrise and sunset.
Try a surf paternoster rig. It will cover most of your target fish.
The sinker will depend on the conditions. If it is windy and there is a bit if a swell it is best to use a star sinker. If it is reasonably calm try a spoon sinker.
Try mulies on a set of gangs to start with and you might have some luck with a tailor,

Gareth The 12 footer would be fine at North Mole
It will certainly help if you catch a good fish and you want to try and keep your catch away from the rocks.
I can't help you too much with south of the river beach fishing spots. But as wayno said, there are heaps of posts on beach fishing on the site.

if you want to travel abit further south try challenger beach in kwinana for tailor, i use a 13ft and i fish any beach around perth plus north mole south mole and in the river for mulloway at nite. my theory is if you can cast it at a spot use it lol. its hit and miss most places in perth but if you get the right time itll be worth it

Alright
I'll try it a North Mole and see what the results are. Do I use the Paternoster rig at North Mole? Quite a bit of rocks there.

Gareth, If the wind is pretty light try either an unweighted
mulie on gangs if you are fishing on the north side of North Mole, or a rig with a running sinker.
Otherwise, go the paternoster. You should be able to cast well away from the rocks - and with the 12 footer you should be able to lift your rig up easy without getting snagged.

I'll test it out. Never use a 12 footer before always used 7"

poor result
Catch was poor, only 2 tailors(35-37cm), snook and a yellow tail. Quite hard to get the full potential of the rod when its quite hard to cast with rocks around. Probably it wasn't a good time.
I'm gonna try catch metro tailor, anybody know where is a good spot. Never caught them before, always getting chopper tailors.
Thanks

The bigger tailor are getting harder to find in the metro area
at the moment Gareth. 35 to 37 cm isn't too bad.

next time your down at the
next time your down at the mole try using a burley cage with a trace about 1mtr long. as you said it is hard to get the full use of a rod down there but with a shorter trace you can give it a bit more , using the burlet you can get a wide range of fish that will take the bait. on the surface you can get using a small set of gangs with either white bait or bluebait, herring and tailor , if you let your bait sink you can get some good size skippy there as well .if you are just after herring or gardies try using the same setup but using small hooks with either shelled pieces of prawn or maggots. just remember keep the line tightish so you can feel the bites and make your burley a bit firmer so it will stay in the cage a bit longer

im just trying to catch
im just trying to catch something big and enjoyable. ive had my share of catching bull herrings and smallish fish on my lil 6 ft rod. Now im setting the bar higher. Btw which part of North Mole. I dont go to the part where most people fish(light house area) usually go to the rocks facing South Mole.

if you want something big
if you want something big your best bet is getting out the end and throwing big baits out there set the rod and wait. you may get big rays , sharks or even the odd demersal . when the tuna are running you can get the odd one out there and even the bonito

"end"
which end are you referring to? The area around the lighthouse?
