Great Day Sun 19th Feb
Looking at all the forecasts I decided that Meteye had the one I liked the best. Early Easterly followed by flat conditions out wide and then a gentle SW to come home.
Going out solo I was prepared to prospect any fish shows on the sounder to see if I could find some new spots. Leaving Hillarys just on sunrise I headed into the 30's and trolled the deep divers as there was masses of bait around today between the 30m line all the way out to 90m. I trolled, prospected, moved on and then trolled some more etc.
A couple of spots had sand whiting, some produced reef species and there was a lot of nothing out there! ha ha. Even in places of nothing you can still get small flathead on the drift. There must be sqillions of them out there. Too small to eat of course. I kept a couple of sand whiting as baits.
One of the spots in 50m I marked as reef was calling so I went back there when I couldn't find any fish shows in the deeper water. Wondering now if I need to get the bigger transducer for my Garmin 95sv. I pulled up and had a couple of drops trying to keep the boat in place and fishing at the same time, which kinda sucked as I missed a few bites. Out with the anchor.
So I set up, got the Shorecatch shred going and set out a few baits. It wasn't until I had a combo bait of whiting fillet with squid tentacles that the eating fish got interested.
First keeper over the side after dogging away down low was a nice 70cm Pinky:
About 20 mins later I had a 52cm baldy on the deck:
So with only me on board it was time to head in with the sounder still showing good stuff:
Awesome conditions out there for the run in around 11:30am:

Yes, great day
Jim, what you missed out on:
Regarding mackeral. When we heard the sounder go berserk, there were 100000 "dots" on the screen and knew there were bait fish under thr boat. We used skippy gear with small bits of squid and mulie to catch them. I reckon berley plays a huge part. Frequently threw surface berley out and also drop down berley (frozen blocks) about 20m down. We were in 30-35m deep.
We got outfished by a 14 yr old kid!! (My mates neighbour). He ended up telling us how to rig, bait etc...wtf! Lol
I actually got a sergeant baker, not a harlequin.. oops. Lol

Finally broke my run of
Finally broke my run of undersized dhus in my own boat and pulled in this young buck and to top it off it was my first dhu on a jig. Had a smile from ear to ear all arvo. Thought I'd hooked a huuuge dhu earlier only to pull up a massive stingray and then hook something huge again but got gill raked just after we had to untangle my deckie's line from mine

No bait hooks
I initially tried bait hooks with no success... changed to the usual hooks I use for skippy/bream and bam!
