Haines Hunter 650 Horizon (Used) vs Tournament 2100 WA (New)
Hi everyone
As always, your expertise and opinions greatly valued and appreciated.
Been searching for a SAFE boat (Family of 4 for fun/overnighters/little fishing) and got my short list to the above 2 - both at around $69k.
The way I'm thinking is:
Haines Option
+ Tried and tested Haines reputation. Heavier, better sea boat, better fit out for sleeping (5), seating plumbed toilet, basin etc.
- The boat I looked at was 6 years old (dealer), well used (200hrs on Yam 150hp), tears on upholstery, grubby seats etc (although comes with 12 month warranty and gets 'detailed')
Tournament Option
+ Stunning looking & brand new. Lovely new Evinrude 150hp. Good write ups/reviews. More robust, longer warranty.
- Lighter hull, not as good at sea without the Haines rep. Not as good for overnighters (fewer berths, no stove, plumbed toilet etc). Slightly narrower beam/length.
Thank you so much for your help.

is the Yam a 4 stroke? If not
is the Yam a 4 stroke? If not then dont touch it for that price, lotta loot for an older (though top of the wozza) boat.
If it is a 4S then its got a million hrs left in it, for rec boat usage neglect or corrosion is the killer not hours. Look closely at the warranty, some have so many clauses and exclusions that theyre not worth having.
200 hrs isnt really that much use in 6 years-thats 40 minutes a week.
EDIT-is it the original outboard? thinking about it I wouldnt expect it to be torn/worn after 200hrs use, unless stored out in the sun etc or maybe on its second eggbeater?
Perhaps at least look at a quote for replacement upholstery and hit the dealer up, boats aint movin that fast at the moment are they?
Personally the Etec would be a minus but I fully realise thats not a universal opinion.

Haines really need horsepower
Haines really need horsepower to perform and a 150 is not going to cut it on a 6.5m boat. That boat really needs at least 200hp to get the best out of it.

why the walkaround?
The tournament bluewater is the same hull as the 2100 walkaround and the same price.you should be able to get toilet and more cabin space in the bluewater 2000.As for a on water boat go out for a test ride and you might be surprised.!0 year warrenty is much better than 1 but I would put a bigger motor on as it sounds abit on the underpowered side.

I always think of resale
I always think of resale value
200hrs is nothing.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Thank you for replies
Rob - yeh, original engine and a 4 stroke.
Solly - Prefer the WA over the Bluewater, mainly because I prefer the look, and the thing I detested about my last boat was having to access the bow through the cabin hatch.
I take your points re the yammie being under powered. But was buoyed a bit by this review which had the 150 yammie :

Would you consider a 2009 Tournament 2000 Bluewater, 150 ETECH ,with 180 hours?

Ditto, they have new haines
Ditto, they have new haines at new prices, but check the HIN and they're all from around 2007!
Made the mistake of visiting that dealer a couple of times, never again!

Was down there ages ago about
Was down there ages ago about selling a boat.
If you want the full list, they also claimed to have replaced a mate's honda's impeller and adjusted the tappets, but bizzarely they did it without breaking the factory goo on the bolts.
I think Haines dropped them as a dealer for a reason.

whats the new price ?
The link said a new haines was 75k but I didnt see a date on it.That would be my choice if there was only 5 grand in it.A tournament with a nice four on the back would up there as well.I had some dramas with my white anchor on the back but the boat is fantastic on the water and very stable at rest.

Prices
New Haines Hunter 650 looking at quite a bit more than that now. The one I'm looking at is 6 years old for 69k (same as a brand new Tournament 2100 WA).
I love the look of the Tournament and appeal of owning a new boat. Just can't get away from the HH being a better sea boat, heavier and more room for weekends to Rotto.

Tournament have changed the
Tournament have changed the hull by changing the chines for more stablity, you cant compare it to the older mustang hulls. The 650 is a solid boat but I still have concerns about the 150hp.By the time you add family and all extra stuff I reckon it might struggle.

Agree mate
From the advice I'm getting, think I might look at a HH 650 with 200hp at least.
That said - still gonna sea trial the T 2001WA (beautiful looking boat)
