Harvey Rainbow's

I got up very early Saterday morning and picked up two of my mates , then headed down the freeway to Harvey dam. Getting there in great time we were greeted with perfect conditions , with only 20min till light started to glow in the sky we quickly rigged up and started to flick lures in to the flat glassy water.

I had spotted a few fish mooching around in the shallows just up from my friends, grabbed the fly rod and headed up towards them only to hear my mate calling out those magic words, " I'm on " His fish put on a great fight as we all know sometimes the don't do much, but this one gave him quite a bit of a scare in close but was finaly lianded.

A very nice Rainbow to start the morning.

I quickly grabbed my gear and headed back to the fish i saw. It was rolling around only 2 feet from the shore so i had to stay back and try to get the fly in front of it. After 6 or 7 attempts it finaly took the fly and went crazy doing a few jumps and heading for deep water very fast. I had him on for a couple minutes but just as i thought i had it beaten the fly pulled and it was gone .

I chased another one up and down for a while but it wouldn't play the game and eventualy dissapeared.

It all got very quite not long after the sun came up so we started to walk the shore flicking lures along the way, pretty soon my friend came up solid on a fish and landed it fairly quick . Not a bad trout for his first one and he was happy to say the least.

We moved around to another part of the dam and with the numbers of fisho's turning up the trout got a bit shy. I have seen a few big Brown's come out of this water but the one that frustrated us for nearly half an hour was huge. He would follow the lures but not commit to a strike, my friend would draw him in with the lure and i would present a fly right in front of his nose but still no take. We tried a variety of lures and flies but he wanted something and it wasn't what we were offering.

We had one more rainbow hook up and dropped it near shore with a few more follows. We decided to have a feed before heading home and were greeted by Fisheries for a licence check. I'ts the first time i have ever seen them there in all the years ive fished the area. So good job guy's and i hope to run into them more offten down around the Trout dams and water ways .

Cheers Grant .

Thanks guy's, It sure was fun to get back down to chase them. Yeah Wes f, it looked cold but wasn't too bad , by 9am we were down to our t-shirts .Good luck with the trout too, we got them on Rapala minno's in trout colours and Mep's spinners, black with gold blades got the most hits.

Good work, was also headed

Sun, 2012-09-02 21:49

Good work, was also headed there bright and early on the saturday when I saw my engine start to smoke about 5 K's from the Dam. I couldnt understand why as I had just had the car serviced on friday. Bloody Kmart auto left the radiator cap off or loose and it was no where to be found!!! Lucklily we had some water and managed to limp into caltex which was surprisingly open at just after 6 in Harvey. After buying a new radiator cap we finally made it to the Dam about 30 mins after sunset. Ended up with some redfin but no trout and learned the hard way to use cheap lures near the trees.

Hey Grant, where did you guys fish. I tried the sticks and banks near the fourth rockwall crossing and then the oppsosite side of the dam from there.

Third causeway

Sun, 2012-09-02 22:44

We started at the third causeway at the wall then worked our way around the next corner. After the sun got up higher we moved to the boat ramp, but lots of people were over there and the fish got spooked very easily.
