Help with Combos for Dampier

I was wondering if I could get some help on the right combo to get for bottom bouncing and trolling in Dampier, mid range depth, no 80+ work. Don’t do a lot of boat fishing so haven’t needed to get anything! I currently have a tyrnos 30 reel with 50lb braid on, but no boat rods. Should I get a dedicated bottom combo and use the tyrnos 30 for trolling or just use the t30 for both? Any ideas on what rods will suit. I’m thinking around the $200 mark for rods and the same if I need to get another reel.

I have checked the forums and a lot of recommendations say go for talica and t curve which is out of my budget!

Thanks in advance

 I've got a Penn squall 40ld

I've got a Penn squall 40ld matched with a  Shimano Terez White 40 - 100lb, loaded with 50lb braid, rod is 6'2" I think. Feels light, quite well balanced in my opinion. This is  just for bottom bashing and trolling, have a seperate combo for jigging.

The Terez is an great rod, about the $200-$250 mark. If i had to buy again, I'd go the 30-60lb Terez tho.

edit: change rod specs

For a economical combo

You could try a Tyrnos 12 with upgraded drag washers and look for  pe4-6 jigging rod.

A Tcurve deep jig 200 would probably be up for the task.

The Tyrnos 30 may get tiring after a full day depending on what you are happy to hold..but fine for a troll.

More fish get caught on the old ugly sticks than any other rod combined I think.. Your reel will be fine mate. Go into bluewater or bcf etc and just grab a 15-24kg fibreglass rod with the clear tip for $100..yes you can spend a Lot more but do you truly need to .. No

That combo will be fine for both trolling and bottom fishing, just be sure to put a long leader on while trolling and have your drag set fairly light for that strike. After picking up the rod you can push the level to its normal drag setting

was meaning if you are going to use the combo for both put a long shock leader on the braid. There is no give in braid so trolling with braid alone will snap the line easy, so the long (I used 10m wind-on Fluoro)leader is for that. Easy to trim that back for bottom bouncing where braid close to terminal tackle is better and then you can use it for both functions.
100lb IMO is a little overkill but many do go that heavy. If trolling up there consider the Razor gang and add some wire between leader and lure. Keep to non shiny swivels etc as these can be bitten off. I used black swivels when lazy and non when I wasn't. Braid direct to Fluoro direct to wire and lure. Twists not a big issue with braid so the less tackle creating a bubble trail whilst trolling the less bite off's.
But no expert and it's been 6yrs since I was up in Kcity.

You will be battling to fish

Thu, 2019-04-11 08:51

You will be battling to fish any water over 35m unless you have a big boat in dampier.  The 80m line is a long long long way out.   Get a decent spinning outfit and then you can throw metals and sticks for tuna or macks and queenies as well.   Bottom fishing success up that way relys on your sounder reading ability. Lots of flat bottom onc you get out past the islands . Get a couple of 100lb handlines for catching blubone and fishing nasty reef inshore  ball sinker and hook and blue claw crab or fresh mullet caught most of my fish when I lived up there.

Its easy to get a feed but

Its easy to get a feed but dont expect trophy size fish. Stripeys ,small cod and grassy snapper will make up a lot of your catch. Its hard with big tides and lots of current.  One thing with boating around the islands get a good map or plotter  as there is lots of stuff to hit in the middle of nowhere. There are LOTS of thing to hit.  Fresh bait get a throw net and catch your own bait fresh is best.

I would second for the Terez

Thu, 2019-04-11 10:49

I would second for the Terez rod, good for both troll and bottom bouncing. When you go deep most the better fishing spots you will be battling against the sharks.

Cruzy111 sumed it up pretty well, handline can be very handy at shallow water bluebone fishing.  Having a spin out fit also a must there can be foot ball field size schools of mack tuna great fun casting metals to them and don't forget chucking poppers to the GT's and queeny's on the Chanel markers.

Thanks for help. Have gone

Thanks for help. Have gone with. A 40-100lb Terez with tyrnos 30 for trolling and a saltiest hyper pe3-5 for bottom. Just need a matching reel but because I’m used to the tyrnos might go with a 16. 20% off at bcf.

Great choice!

Tue, 2019-04-23 16:25

Terez is a great rod, defo feels a lot lighter than 40-100lb. Ive also got the Saltist Hyper as my jigging rod, but its the 2-4 PE one. Matched with a Thunnus Baitrunner Ci4, as its easy to drop it to the bottom again with the second drag open, and can also just use for dead bait and letting them run.

Thanks for everyone’s help

Thanks for everyone’s help with rod choices. The saltist/torium 20 combo got a hammering but we pulled in some great fish. Weather wasn’t great but got a couple of perfect days and bagged out on red emporer, rankin and trout. Did a little trolling and hooked a decent Mackie but got chomped by a fairly large bronzie (I think). I’ll add some pics to my photo section when I have time. Thanks again.
