help im stuck!

hey fellas im stuck between the 13ft sensor and the 12ft sensor. i want to pair one of these with me emblem pro but im unsure on witch rod to pair it with im looking to cast baits for mulloway but also metals for tailor. i usshally use 12ft rods for lures anway but i doubt that it will be able to cast a scalie and star sinker. unlike the 13ft witch seems like a good rod for big baits but to big for lures. what do you guys think i should go for?

thanks parry

personally I wouldnt try and cover those two bases with one rod, particularly if your targetting your mulloway off the beach.  the sensor goes well with the emblem pro but that combo(i use it for surf fishing) but will be a bit of a pig for casting lures at tailor

13 foot sensor is great for

Mon, 2012-11-26 16:32

13 foot sensor is great for casting mullies and up to big baits like mullet , maackeral etc, picked up a 9 foot eupro cyclone for casting lures but its heavy enough to use for soaking mullies too

 Out of interest how come

Out of interest how come you've gone for the 13ft Sensor? I'm assuming the higher cast weight?

I've been eyeing off one of these at the moment. Can get them here for about $320 landed. They're 11'3" but you can chuck out 6-10 oz of weight (might be overkill for most people though).

I still think we suffer from lack of range in heavy duty surf rods.

I agree we dont get the range of surf rods america or africa do and we definately pay more for them here.  to me that rod you linked looks like a short version of a saltiga ballistic surf which sells here for around $600 but is a great rod (3 piece 13ft) it has the same specs but there must be something different.  I am at work so cant check the blank number

personally I find an extra foot or 2 makes a big difference for how I fish, sometimes shorter people dont like it especially with the high mount reel seats.

in this range if you find a poseidon Bantam I would highly recommend looking at it also although pretty hard to find, a few 2nd handers pop up from time to time.

sometimes its a risk buying a rod you cant feel, I bought a couple of assasins from south africa acouple of years ago.  I dont like the blanks or the build quality but nobody sells them off the shelf so thats the risk I took.  I sold one and kept the other incase I ever want to cast a 2 kilo brick or more so ballooning at a spot like Wagoe. 13ft keeps the line above the reef ledge. Basil Manning is the website worth a look if your after a rod you have to do an international money transfer.  At the time Ranger in osbourne park was selling some Assasin and loomis/franklin rods sporadically but usually way to light for what I wanted.  The dont anymore as far as I know since they have changed management but to buy the rod from south africa was half the price

my advice (and I have probably said it enough times on here) if you want to cast heavier than the sensor surf can go to the saltiga Ballistic, yes its a bit overpriced but has way more feel and versatility than other rods in its cast weight class.  other wise the 13ft sensor is a great rod that services alot of people pretty well.

Bigger weights

I just worry about the shift from 'glass to graphite. I don't even know why I've talked myself from glass to graphite, I'm just not that keen on them. The graphite's just seem to have that bit of extra whip on them, I may be wrong though.

I usually use a 3-4 oz star sinker and chuck a mulie onto a gang. Realistically we're probably looking at 5-6oz already. I worry that if I go the huge run-up and turf it out if anything should go wrong in the process, we could be looking at a snapped rod. Obviously glass rods are a bit more forgiving. I've had a couple of occasions where I haven't flicked the bail arm all the way over and it's flicked back during the launch, causing a 2m cast, and put a huge amount of pressure on my rod, I don't know how graphite would hold up in this instance of a rookie mistake.

@Rig - I can definitely see what your saying about the extra length though. I use a 12' now and in all honesty I'm probably not that keen on losing 9" but it falls in the cast range where I'm not worrying.

They do have a 12' and 15' in that range but then the cast weight pushes up to 8 - 12'

Personally my ideal rod would be 12'-12'6" with a cast weight of 6-10, graphite, under $300. Yet to find that miracle though.

8-12

unless your only interested in sharks and xos rays 8-12 just isnt necessary and your probably better off slide baiting anyway which could be done with a sensor surf no worries.

as for glass/graphite alot of the south oz mulloway fisherman are still using glass I think live fibres customized are favoured.  I fish a variety of differnet styles and once you use graphite and braid its very hard to go back.  A strong graphite rod is pretty hard to snap though.

to get what you want rod wise it actually doesnt work out cheaper but custom made is the way to go though not many rod builders are interested as I found out a few years ago.  personally I would buy a saltiga ballistic blank, shorten the butt and get it fitted with some K guides and slim grips but a high mount and low mount reel seat.  but now your talking $800 haha how much do you want it, great rod that can with O/H or spin.  There are sometimes a few blue marlin blanks around that might suit also.
