Help needed for fishing trip in Hamelin bay

Hi everyone, so in January of 2017 I'm heading down to Hamelin bay for a fishing trip. I am bringing my kayak and was wondering if anyone has any tips for fishing for whiting, sambos, skipped down there.

P.s- if anyone is going down at this time of the year let me know

Thank, Mitchell Donovan

mate the best advice i could give you is make the short drive to augusta the river mouth there is good for skippy and sambos at times if no luck there jump in your yak and head up the blackwood river for some giant bream have hooked some monsters  in that river

also not 100 percent sure but there might be salmon down there at that time aswell so any beach is worth a try

Hi Mitchell, just head straight off the ramp and fish around the moored boats plenty of herring squid ect. Just be careful of the wind but can be strong and push you out to sea or towards Boranup. Who knows might even be a big fish lurking around.

Heaps of herring from the shore line and I mean heaps as the sun goes down... just head left from the boat ramp until you can't go any further (will see the cliffs to the left) We just used a plasitc burley cage with pollard and a long shank hook with a white wall plug... i know you didn't mention herring but you can use that for a backup

 Mitch, There is a cracking

Wed, 2016-12-14 15:40

 Mitch,

There is a cracking spot for sambos in the bay which is easily reachable with a kayak.

If you look at the island and look just to the north you will see a small reef which is breaking (it wont be breaking in summer as there is no swell) but it might have just a little white water on it. Its in a direct line between the island and the big rock which sticks out of the water but closer to the island.

I call this skippy rock.

Plenty of skippy with some burley (well over 1kg models) and some cracking sambos there. Be prepared to be towed around! its about 12-14m deep off the side of the reef and live herring is your best bet, they love them there, I've even got a legal dhu there before.

Dont bother fishing around the reef right next to the boat ramp, its a waste of time. Most mornings you will have an easterly so you can go round the cliff on your yak, give the cliff a bit of a wide birth as it gets a bit shallow but as i said there will be no swell in summer so quite safe. Head out about half way to the island and head south fishing the sand holes, some good skippy and whiting to be had in there. Running ball sinker with a long shank using a bit of squid.

Also, on the note of squid, take some jigs, there are massive squid around there and in the bay. Just fish across the weed banks.

Hope this helps

Have a quick look at a map of the reserves around the area before you go. I know there's quite a few areas near the main island that you can't fish, might save yourself a bit of $$$ in fines

I'm in Hamelin for the first week of Jan and as I'm not taking the boat was looking for some land based ideas.  Will be taking the 4wd so a few more options.   Keep the pointers coming

We had a ball last time we went,When it blows you can anchor off the island to the right we caught big sand whiting flathead and skippy. If you get an easterly the ocean side off the Island has rows of reef and between them you get big harlequin and all sorts of goodies.Yellow tail kings are common in the area.I trolled a rattling spot lure and landed a big mackeral tuna there one year.We used to go every year with the soccer club on the first long weekend of january. You can buy cray directly off the pro if you see him come in we got 3 for $20 but it was a while ago its still half what you would pay at the shops. The inshore crays get taken out by divers early in the season but there are heaps further off shore
