Bombarded for next weeks

Looks like we'll be bombarded by the media for the next couple of weeks with clips and pics of white pointers whenever you turn the tv, radio on or open a paper. The newhounds will be right on this like a blowfly to a dunny pan.

Wed, 2012-06-20 14:25

This bit in the article is ridiculous - no evidence what happened to him at all - but somehow this is enough to identify not only that he got done by a shark, but also the species

"Monday, 10 October 2011: Bryn Martin was likely taken by great white shark after he was last seen about 350m from the shore as he headed out to sea on his daily swim in front of the Indiana tea house."

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Search

Wed, 2012-06-20 14:49

We got the call from someone on the beach at 8.15am advising they could see what appeared to be a surfboard with no one on it off Mullaloo Beach. Sametime we get a report of a shark off Pinnaroo Point.

By the time we got out there searching Fisheries had picked up the surfski and advised person was all OK on the beach.

On way back spotted 4 Kayakers leaving Hillarys heading North. Advised them what had happened. They paddled back pretty quickly.

Conditions this morning were shitty to say the least. Seas very sloppy from the storms with NW wind picking up.

Also saw a couple of trailers in the car park, one big enough for a tinnie.

Again I ask why are people out in these conditions!!!!!!!

Warnbro Sound

Wed, 2012-06-20 15:29

I heard on the ABC this afternoon, that there was a sighting of a GW in the sound this morning as well. They said it attacked a crab net as it was being pulled into the boat.

No more leaning over to grab the floats now, will be using a hook I reckon.

Hahaha already looked way to far into it but not worth the massive fines if I get caught, is one of my dreams but until I can get around the legalitys it's just a dream, going to send an email to fisheries and see if I can get tags and an exemption which I can't see happening at all.. If I get the go ahead screw the torium in going an 80W and a pe12 gt rod built for overhead!!!

Not advocating any law

Thu, 2012-06-21 09:58

Not advocating any law breaking, but couldn't you be just 'fishing for big bronzies' or something? And if a GWS decided to grab the line instead, then so long as you released it, I dont see that you could get fined as not breaking any law?

Yeah already thought it all

Thu, 2012-06-21 10:59

Yeah already thought it all through but it's the laws there protected by that's the problem, they have laws from fisheries, DEC, state government, national government and fairly sure the WWF or one of the enviro groups have international laws protecting them so if I just had to deal with fisheries fair enough I would risk it but if I could be charged under 4 different regulations going as high as national or even further I imagine fines would be rediculous and would more than likely end up with some sort of criminal record, this is also the problem if anyone wants to make it legal to target them or have anything to do with them because the need approval from all of these groups separately.

gw bite

Wed, 2012-06-20 21:02

saw the news story on 7 tonight, i can't say that i saw anything that looked like bite marks in the yak, yes there was abig chunk out of it and the owner said he saw the shark but the damage looked like the yak had been rammed by the gw and it didn't actualy bite the yak. There was no classic half moon type of bite mark or scratch where teeth had scraped along the body. so perhaps the gw did exactly as was mentioned he actually rammed the yak from below and the construction of the yak was such that it just fractured when hit was the yak made of some type of rigid plastic didn't look like fibre glass.

just a thought

Thu, 2012-06-21 04:53

A few of the attacks the sharks where never properly seen, the people involved wouldn't know how to identify it ect just straight away media screams white and no one thinks anything of it, down south mate of mine was watching these guys surfing when about a 3m bronzie came and had a look at them, they all got out scream it was a great white. Whites just get blamed because its good media and there well known, half the population wouldn't even know there is such thing as a tiger shark or bull shark that attacks people.

Doesnt matter what breed it

Thu, 2012-06-21 05:45

Doesnt matter what breed it was the guy on the ski would have still shat himself.Still think that if it has a go at a human no matter what breed it is ( yeah yeah ive heard all the B.S about in their domain etc) and its within 200mtrs or so offshore then BANG  all over for the shark ( its a fish) and Humans even if they are tossers are more important than any fish.

But what if the Shark was really quite a nice Shark, that is only misunderstood and only actually wanted to make friends? Probably got mistaken that humans dont shake hands with their mouths.

I reckon leave it alone the real predators are people like the ones that bashed and robbed that blind woman in Ashfield they're far more dangerous than sharks and the worst thing is if they catch them they'll probably only get a slap on the wrist

Chris, people call white

Thu, 2012-06-21 22:48

Chris, people call white shark cause i usually is! Tiger dont and as far as i know have never bitten the back of a kayak off, neither have hammer heads or bronzies. Reason they call white is cause it always is!!!!!!

Something needs to be done and it seems culling would be in order but i dont think its right to just do killing them but i reckon a ban needs to be lifted....Ever since the bans where lifted, more people killed and attacked each year, waters are more unsafe than ever....

A work Colleague i once

Fri, 2012-06-22 01:33

A work Colleague i once worked with had her kayak damaged by a Tiger on her Kayaking trip From Melbourne to Cape York. I think it was in 2009??? Apparently the Tiger had a big crack at the bow of her Kayak around the Shoalwater Bay Region, which was pretty scary for her as she was completely on her own paddling through a military trainning zone(for which she had permission) so no rec boaties to help her out if she needed it. Fortunantly for her it didnt bite completely through the hull of her kayak and she hooned straight for shore as fast as she could. Made some repairs to the teeth holes then continued on.

Interestingly what stopped her from getting all the way to Cape York was somwhere near Lockhart River i think, her Kayak was attack by a Crocodile about 1km out to sea. This did damage her Kayak and she said it was quite a frantic paddle to shore with the Croc following. She called the end to the trip after that as she was planning to continue all the way to Darwin. She said Sharks, no dramas, Crocs HELL NO!!!!

Sat, 2012-06-23 06:35

the talk about waters being more unsafe than ever and shark attacks rising in numbers, stop and think the population is rising bringing larger numbers in to recreational sports and swimming in the water. if there were 50 cars on the road you would see alot less accidents than you would with 50000, same principle i think. attacks may be higher but so is the number of bodies in the water.
